Chain and shackle not need for a mushroom, IMO. If you are using it in a lake, or slow flowing river, you are counting on the mushroom to get sucked into the muck and sediment to hold you steady. If you are using a danforth anchor, then a shackle and maybe some chain will help but with a small jon boat, that probably isn't needed. If you are trying to hold in a swift moving river, the mushroom isn't going to help you much unless it gets jammed up in some rocks and then, you are probably kissing it goodbye anyways.
