If you want to keep the shell with the leather-like covering on you scrub the moss & dirt off with a scrub brush right after killing the turtle, then when you cut the shell off I would use a pair of sidecutters to cut off the vertabrae as close to the shell as you can, there is a nice piece of meat there sort of like a tenderloin, then scrape as much tissue as you can off of the shell before salting the inside only. Then scrape that off & do again until it is pretty dry. Then I use clear shellac to cover the inside & outside. It will last for years like that. If you boil the shell or let it dry out before shellacing it,the outside covering will curl up & come off in segments then it will be sort of clear like fingernail material.Once you let the skull dry & let the bugs clean off the tissue.it looks like a shrunken head & you will get a clear view of the sharp jaws & especialy the hook. Take my word for it they will tear right through the meat on you hand.I don't know if the head of the one in the pict. is going to work,it looks like he had a bad day. lol sam

Yeah, The head was stabbed about 4 times straight through the skull, the top neck another 4, the bottom neck another 4 & the throat gashed & the thing was still crawlin' 'round 34 hrs. later  They r defiantly the King ov the Lake.

The other one I have from a few days ago is still poopin' out clam shells as ov today. He is gonna cook on a fire.

Saw a nice size turtle by the dock when we went out for dinner Wednesday night on the Allegheny in PGH
After tying the boat up we were walking on the dock and a turtle about 16"-18" long + tail swam over.
It acted like it was begging for food like the ducks and geese.

Sounds like the snakes & coons at Arthur

I had a nice Snapper for a week, replacing water daily & gave it to Timbo the other day to give to a guy that makes soup for the American Legion post 243. Timbo brought my cooler back last night & said the thing escaped the first night. I kept a boat battery on the lid when I had it but he aint that smart

Hope it eats a bunch ov his kittens now

 U see Kimberly lately???

 Thanks Redneck,

Just wish we would have been prepared to catch won that quick. Felt purdy bad for him the way it went down.

I should hit the pond next door. It is drying up & is loaded with Crappy, Bass, Gills some Perch & Cats & has some very large Snappers in it. The fish are splashin' all over the place. I should relocate them to some ov the other ponds walking distance from my house before it's too late. It was dug out a few yrs. ago to make deeper & clean the sediment (black muck from the basin. It held water good till about a few weeks ago, I don't know what happened, maybe Muskrats or it just blew a leak .

I have 2 large bags ov prime meat for soup from that rough neck. Gonna wait for a garden harvest before we make the soup

 Good Luck man.
