Measuring Fish

On the special regulation lakes where crappie have to be nine inches, do you measure the fish with it's mouth open or closed?  There is a difference there.   I know you are to squeeze the tail together.   Does anyone know for sure?

Look in the regulation book they show a diagram on the way PA measures fish. Go by that and you will be safe

Mouth closed and pinch the tail.  You can get an extra 1/4 to 1/2 inch out of them with their mouth open and on lakes like Wilmore, you'd get a pretty big fine if you are measuring that way.

    Thanks for the replies.

I bought my fishing license on line and did not pick up a regulation book.   I think I have one from last year.

Gillz  Wilmore was the lake I was referring to.  The Fish Commission will measure every fish.

My general rule of thumb is... when in doubt, throw it back... is a few oz fish fillet worth a fine?

you will normally get a 1/4 inch leeway when an officer measures your fish---but not every officer will do this--if the fish is short.......just get ready to write the check to the local DJ

but eyesandgillz hit it on the head, fisherlady2 hit it on the head too......

use your head, I don't think a close fish is worth the ticket you will get............

I measure the fish with the mouth shut and the tail in the natural position. Mouth to tip of tail. Sure I might loss a little length according to the book, but I know if it is just over the size limit the way I measure it will be legal when the fish cop measures it.

For sure. I add a half inch to evert thing kept. Got wrote up years ago for some eyes that were 15 1/4. Actually when I asked to be shown the proper way to meaure, he obliged and the 3 illegals were in fact over 15. Honest to God he said "how did you do that?", and still wrote me up. No lie. At Pymy you don't get a 1/4" leeway..
We never kept any thing under 15 1/2" so they had no way to make them short...

Yeh I know.  I hate to throw nice crappies back that are just pushing 9" but not worth it to get fined.   Have to throw them back. Do they allow for shrinkage on a fish?  Probably not.  Thats why I try to keep my fish alive when I reach the dock.

Why don't you get a crappie measure cup. Simple to use. Put the crappie in and bingo. They sell them at Gander Mountian. The warden at wilmore tole me that he uses the cup. I have measured a lot of crappie for people that thought they were nine using the tape but as it turned out they were only 8 and 3/4
