I don't know crap about critiquing this(right vs. wrong), but I dig them all man, you got some serious patience and skill.

I really like the looks of the Irish turkey/green bay packer.  If I were a fish I would eat it.

    Cold - Nice Ties Man....

You stacking the hackle and tying in kinda like a beard?
Or... wrapping and pulling it all to the bottom and tying off?

I tried a few of these ( didnt turn out quite as nice as yours) and along with getting the wings to sit nice and straight getting the hackle to look right is a bit tricky too...

Funny I thought Married wings would be a bit harder than they were though............

These were all tied with wrapped hackle. If I can get it to look neat, I think the wrapped hackle looks better, but Bergman's method of tying in a clump of fibers as a beard is a quick, simple alternative that makes for a very clean look as well. I think that the wrapped hackle tends to stand out better (whereas the beard lies more flat against the body), giving it better action in the water as well.

Use thick webby hen feathers...saddle if you have it in the right color. I have a mottled light brown w/ black speckles that I really like to use.

I agree that your flies look really nice.   I am curious how effective are wet flies in general for Trout fishing?  I have fly fished for over 35 years (with about a 10 year stretch in the middle that I didn't fish much) but I've caught very few fish on Wet Flies.   This year in PA I fished 25 days and caught 170 trout all on nymphs, streamers and dries (listed from most to least).  I dedicated one whole day to fishing wets and one partial day and I didn't catch a single fish on either day.   I matched my wet fly to the insects that were present (light cahills and caddis) and fished two flies at a time.   I'm certain wet flies work very well for some anglers so I must be using the wrong technique.  I tried the same 2 methods I employ with nymphs (1) slightly upstream cast with short line and weight on line (2) long cast quartering downstream allowing the fly to swing across the current.     They just don't seem to be as effective as other flies so I tie very few and use them very little.   Any thoughts or suggestions?

Those flies have crossed over into "too pretty to fish" territory.

P.S. I saw a guy tying in beard hackle on traditional wet flies and nymphs by tying the clump in on top of the hook facing forward, thread moving toward the eye. Then he'd pull it back into beard position, taking a few turns underneath the beard to get it to stand out a little bit. Using this approach, he could also end up with split legs, a bunch on each side of the hook. I never did it, but it worked for him. Might be too fussy for my non-dexterous, efficiency loving approach.

I tie 'em in beard style, usually, and prevent shifting around the hook with a soft loop or two and pulling UP! on the thread at the moment of truth. It usually works. Usually.

Really nice flies you've tied there.

Once again - very nice Cold......You really ought to think about framing them.

"They say you forget your troubles on a trout stream, but that's not quite it..... you begin to see where your troubles fit into the grand scheme of things, and suddenly they're just not such a big deal anymore."
