Archery Hunter Shot

Just curious, how many archery hunters show floresant orange while in a tree during the overlap muzzleloader seasons.

The thing that is strange is, you don't have to show while in a tree during the fall turkey season, turkey are in trees.

No excuse for the shooter, when was the last time you seen a 200 lb squirrel, but if the archer would have waved a orange hat or glove things would have turned out different.

I do wear a reversable camo/orange hat and have had to use it in the past.  I don't like to show my tree stand locations like the next guy, but if I feel it will keep me safe, then I show the orange side of my hat.

Thanks for reading.  John

I wear a FO vest and hat while moving and keep my hat on while in my stand during the overlap.  That is the law.

I don't really know for sure, but from what I read and saw in the news, he waved his arm a couple of times to allert him that a hunter was in a tree and then he was shot.

Absolutely no excuse for shooting another human being. You break rule #1 always IDENTIFY your target.
I got peppered by a fellow that was just driving down the road and had just bought a new shotgun. He saw a possum along the road stopped and shot at it. I was sitting in the woods 50yrds in and got peppered pretty good. You talk about one ****ed off hunter. I came unglued on the fellow..

As I put my orange on saturday, I wondered... how many guys think you still dont need orange, I always wrap mine around the tree. Its orange bark pattern so it blends right into the tree. No deer is worth getting shot.

Just imagine, no orange, you see just a portion of someones fuzzy shaved head...bad news.

A friend of my family was killed while turkey hunting about 15 years ago. The teenager who did it "thought he was a turkey".

    Needless to say....I wear orange.

Wife don't let me wear orange for some reason and she threw out my safety harness..... Must have read up on the insurance policies .....  I hunt private/family ground and I've never seen another hunter but ; always carry orange ( in my backpack) just incase someone comes around. Guess I'm lucky to be the only archery guy for miles !!!

26 feet seems excessive to me too, but I guess I could just as easily be killed falling 15 feet as 26.

18 to 20 ft is my standard.....any higher and I start to get nervous and the angle of the shot you have higher than that is pretty extreme. I guess if you like the height and are proficient at shooting nearly straight down....good for you.

I usually stick around 18-20ft. I dont have any problem being seen at that height. I know I am at that height because the chord I pull my bow up the tree with is 25, and I usually have a little slack in the chord before I pull my bow up.

Much higher than 20ft will make your shots more and more difficult and risky. Sharp angled shots often result in only one lung being hit which will result in a dead deer, but not necessarily a recovered deer.

...and about falling from a tree? Simply wear your safety harness. With a harness, you wont hit the ground. Its that simple. I had an arguement with a guy a few years back about the safety of portable stands. This guy told me they arent safe because a friend of his fell from one and is now in a wheel chair. I suggested that the stand was perfectly safe, but perhaps his friend wasnt being safe, since he didnt have a harness on.

A little high for me. I stick to 12-18 feet. You shouldn't even pull your bow up before putting on your harness. Had mine save me when I dozed of once while sitting 15 feet off the ground.
You must also make sure you put it on properly. We lost a young state trooper here in NW Pa a couple years ago. The stand he climbed into collapsed and he got hung on his harness.
Another thing to watch for are the screw in tree steps that fold up and have fairly aggressive teeth on their face. One of the fellows that hunts with us lost his ring finger he was climbing down and jumped off the last step. His wedding band caught on the step and turned his finger inside out..Be Safe....

As far as harnesses go, it might be a little slow but I use it going up and coming down. All it takes is one minor mistake and you're either crippled for life or dead. The bow doesn't come up until I am completely secure with all other equipment.

To those guys who may be using the old type of harness that just goes around your waist or chest you're asking for trouble. A fall with one of those will break some ribs, maybe puncture a lung and suffacate you. Be safe invest in a good harness.
