Oil/Fuel Mixture

Hoping someone has the answer or can lead me in the right direction to find one. I have a Mercury 150 hp outboard on my boat, I use 1 quart of oil per 12 gallons of gas. I use that because the guy that had it before me used that ratio, anway, I bought a 9.8 mercury over the winter. Do you think I could use the same fuel/oil mixture, because they both take the same fuel line connector and that would save space on my boat if I didnt have to bring an extra fuel tank.
The year of the 150 is an 87
The year of the 9.8 is an 84...so I am told

    Yep, roughly 50:1

My old Johnson 9.9 takes 50:1...

sorry, no real help.... but we're geting somewhere by process of elimination.

    EDIT: Here's a link... http://www.outboardrepairs.com/topics/002600.html

    confirms 50:1...but it's just a message board.

I think you're at 50:1 so you should be good for both motors. Shouldn't be hard to check though.

Here's a helpful calculator to determine the ratio

50 to 1 = 16oz of oil to 6 gals gas. I have a old johnson 9.9 we use only for trolling and 50 to 1 is way to much oil for trolling we constantly were oil fouling plugs even with the hottest plug gapped .005 more so we started backing off on the oil mix we now use 12oz synthetic oil to 6 gals gas hardly ever foul plugs anymore. I would never use this mix if I were going to run this motor wide open for any period of time. If my big motor quits I would never use my kicker to try and run in that's why every year I get Lake Shore Towing Insurance $90.00 for ALL of Lake Erie cheap peace of mind. I would never ask someone to take their valuable fishing time to tow me in.

Relayer has a point, when using the motor for trolling only you may want to mix it a little leaner. I have known people that kept two tanks in the boat, one for trolling and one for running. FYI the Boat US membership is less expensive and Lakeshore is still your towing service on Erie plus it covers other areas as well, I'm also switching my insurance to them this year.

50 to 1 is good i used a 1964 9.9 for years for steelies and found that when i switched to a syn oil west marine oil it smoked alot less and left no slick like a old outboard does also seem to run smoother

I have 1985 evinrude 9.9 on the toon-boat and takes 100 to 1 Never really heard of a mixture that light before. Well for a boat motor. Kind of nice use quite a bit less oil. Dave
