indicator fly

OK, I'm sure most people have been there before... fishing a hole with an indicator, and a trout comes up, and tries to takes a sip of your indicator.  Obviously you can counter this by using a terrestrial as your float, with a nymph hanging off the hook.

My question:
Is there a knot that I can tie, that will allow me to slide my indicator fly up and down my leader so that I can change it according to water depth, but strong enough to bring in a 10-12 inch trout?

Just curious.

A klemheist or mule type of knot might work. I've been considering this lately, but working out the geometry of a knot and how it will behave with tippet is tricky.

My father (god rest his soul) used to fish droppers for natives back in the day. He taught me a little rig that allowed him to adjust the length as you say. Tied to the bend of the dry fly, he would then take the tippet (about a 16"piece), take it through the eye of the dropper fly or nymph, then tie the tag end onto the mainline of the dropper tippet with an improved clinch knot - cinch up very tight.  This knot would slide up and down the dropper mainline adjusting the length of the nymph. There is a loop though and hookups would take a bit of getting used to if the trout would take the nymph since the knot would slide down to the nymph eye till the loop tightens up. Never tried it on a heavy fish like steelhead but it does work with trout. When he used this - he never went lighter than 4x because it could wear on the hook eye as it adjusts. He was always thinking out of the box - coming up with some lainbrain ideas - funny thing is though alot of them worked.
