I usually go with an egg pattern with a nymph behind.  When they are hot on egg patterns I will fish a size 14 spawn with a size 16 or 18 of the same color under it.  Crushes them.

using setups like this work great but its  not something to use when the fish are stacked up in a place, really ups the chances of foul hookn one.. also not great when the leaves are heavy.     when i fish them its the same as mossy does nymph of some kind and a egg pattern...

It depends on the water and the situation.  On some of the smaller trout streams I fish, i have had a good bit of success with a small nymph behind a bugger or bunny streamer.  On the larger waters that I fish that are more prone to swinging flies, I have run a smaller streamer or spey style fly behind a much larger one with good results.

Ok. Dont you mean two sacks??

Egg patterns are always a good choice for the top fly, they are a "go to" pattern for steelhead and can be productive fishing the right color on any day. Fishing a nymph behind an egg is another deadly combo. Fishing nymphs alone is great, but when a fish see's an egg pattern, kees in on it and decides not to take it, a lot of times they will see that nymph hanging behind it and it will produce a hit.

Ya thanks man, it was kinda boring fishing alone but peacful. The fact that I had a fast water stretch loaded with fish and no human in sight helped out though.

fcfly. If your talking steelhead I never use two flys. Just asking for trouble. Trout fishing the imagination is endless 2, even 3 flys. So many ways to go.

New to fly fishing and have never fished a 2 fly set up, why are we asking for problems?  Trying to learn, not being controversial.  My guess is greater chance of snagging.

Two flies increases the chance of foul hook ups.  Its very hard to fish two at a time in slow holes where the fish are stacked but in fast water its not a problem hardly at all.  All depends on the kind of water you target.  Oh, and how much attention and care you use when pulling the line out of the water to re cast.

Not if your hooks are buried in an egg sack.

Imust do things bassackwards because I have a greater percentage of foul hookups in fast water. As soon as the current pulls on your line the fish feels it and take off flying. You have little chance to "feel the head shaking' to know if you are fouled. I do not have surgeon-like touch so I can just hang on. Most of the time if the fish is fouled the hook pulls out quickly however. This is probably the reason I read in the Forum of " I hooked 20 but only landed 2". You have 2 flies 18inches apart, too easy to line fish also. yhat is why 2 flies are so effective.

    WF,

Are you "high sticking" in the fast water?  That could be the problem if you have a bunch of slack line being pulled through the water.  I'd guess that 90% of the fish I catch in fast water are hooked in the roof of the mouth.  Another oddity is for some reason, this year especially, I'm getting the fish in the fast water on the TOP fly.  No lining there.  I alos don't put that much distance between my flies.  Maybe 12 to 14 inches tops.

Good point Mossy. Actually I do high stick or verticle fishing as I call it , but fishing wider streches or real fast water ,it still is a problem so I keep it to one fly. Thanks for the info, it will help a lot of fisherman.

For those who float fish dropping a nymph off a single egg is a deadly tactic.  Now I'm never single egging withoug a nymph below.  Using a 14 egg hook and a 12 or 14 nymph, foul hooking pretty much never happens.
