Just curious

What flyrod do you use?  If you have more than one and had to choose, what would you keep?

    For Steelhead a Rogue 9' 8-weight.

For Trout a MSO custom 9' 4 weight.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

    My rods:

    1- 9wt
    3- 7wts
    1-6wt.
    5-5wts
    3-4wts.
and a few that need some work, guides, wraps ect....

I could probably do without one of the 5's and 7's.

I have too many rods BUT I have specific favorites for differing situations.  So, For steel   an 11' 6 wt made by flyfishing dave, for general a custom 9' 5 wt made by skip,  For really small streams a custom 7' 3 wt. and bamboo 9' 5 wt that I built for technical stuff.  But my all around favorite rod is a 8'6" ugly stick in 7 wt with an automatic reel.    The Ugly has caught everythin from 6" brookies to kings and it still works well.

    Trout: 7' 9" 3wt St. Croix Avid

    OR

    7' 0" 4wt Diamondback Diamondglass

If I had to keep just one...probably the Avid.

St. Croix SC IV 3rd Generation 9'6" 7 wt - Got this blank at a steal, guy didn't realize what he was selling....

I still haven't found the time to build it for myself in lieu of all the 19 rods I have in queue though....but it's a good one and one that will stay with me.

Let's see, my favorite or probably the one that gets used the most is the Sage XP 10' 6 weight.  It's a cannon.

Trout: Orvis T3 9' 5 weight tip flex.  I like fast rods.
    couple other 5 weights and a 3.

Salmon, pike and largemouth:  Custom 9'6" 8 weight Loomis GLX blank built by Pete Gool.

Very soon to have: Custom switch rod and 7' 3 weight built by Loomis.  Can't wait.

I'm thinking custom is the way to go from now on.  I like the personal touch and choices a rod builder gives you to make you feel the rod was built specifically for you.

I haven't yet tried flyfishing for steelies..the few times i make the 300 mile each way trip to the sr, it is easier to work using spin 9.6 ft steelie rod.. but i have a question..i have seven fly rods my first was a fenwick 8' 6wt. gave it to my brother.. second was the first orvis close-out priced 5# trident i picked up over a decade ago at orvi in roscoe.. over the years i bought 4 wts 2 sage and 4 and 3 wt g-loomis.. i have a 3 pc powell 8 wt but my heaviest weight forward lines are 6 wt forward float and a 7wt wet line on a 456 battenkill reels .. could i get away with the 7wt wet sink on the 8wt powell for big flies? I have yet to try it out upstate somewhere.. also the 5wt fast tip orvis trident feels like it was meant for 6wt line..i have used 5 wt,lazer and 444 cortland for small streamers but when i go big bead buggers it really isn't enough.. so i'm going to try the 6wt line on it before shopping for a modest priced new 6wt. fly rod.. I guess i'm asking is it really critical to match line wts to specified wt rods i used a 4 on a 3wt g-loomis and it is fine! haven't tried the 6 wt on the 5 wt rod yet

I probably have about a dozen different fly rods, from a Fisher 8ft- 2/3 weight, to an Fenwick 9ft-9 weight.

The one I use the most by far, is a 4 piece 9ft- 5 weight Sage RPL+.

Most fast graphite rods can be overlined with no problem.

    3-7wts
    2-5wts
    1-4wt

I am near and dear with my Sage LE 9' 4wt. It sees about 95% of all my troutin action.

My "old" steelhead rod was a 10' 7wt Clearwater which I really don't care for. I just got my custom built 11'4" switch from Loomis about a month ago. It has yet to hit the water, although I am off for the next week so I am sure it will get some use then.

    I have,

    -2 8wt's.
    -2 5wt's.
    -1 6wt. (I built)
    -2 4wt's.
    -1 6'6 2wt.(I built)

Flyrods are like golf clubs, the more you have the easier the game. Ok not really but I like to have a specific rod for different situations. I could fish my 8ft. 5wt on the native creeks I fish but It's not nearly as fun as the 2wt. And when I fish steel I like to have at least 2 rods with me but thats just me..

I think the larger bead head bugger size 8-6-4 would be best using a 6wt outfit..i had used my 5 wt fast tip orvis trident 8'6" and although it is much easier than the 4wt.. i think i want to check out a few medium to slow action 6wt rods.. It is said todays high tech modulous rods came a long way as for getting higher performance at a third price of what i spent on flyrods years ago. Anybody care to share an opinion as for what might be best sellers .. something in the 200 or less .. I like my sage vps490 paid 325.00 so far, that was my best bang for the buck ? I met a pro guide on the WB this spring and he presented me with a stick same weight /size as my vps for comparison.. i felt it and agreed it seemed to load better..co. name i can't remember but it wasn't a big name begins with the letter T i think he said they cost about 180.00 anyway.. i'll try finding out the name someday.

    I want a 6'6" 2 or 3 wt.

THEN I will be done.....hopefully, I really already have all I need for what I will ever do.  I need new bow sights & a rest.

I disagree.  Seems like some people get more joy out of being seen with expensive gear than actually catching fish with it. I only have one rod (a crappy one) and I have had great results with it in my short time fly fishing.  I have caught fish (panfish, largemouth, and/or trout) with it on every outing, and had a blast doing so.....not what most would consider crappy results.  The rod is a Wind River 9ft 5wt from Cabela's.  Came with backing and line strung on a piece of garbage plastic reel, got it half off for $50.  The fact that it will not win any beauty contests or be looked at with envy by other fishermen is fine with me because I bought it to catch fish with.

B.W. Right on. If your not catching fish it aint the rod, its you. If you spend even 100 bucks for a rod. It will be more then fishable.
