Oak Orchard Trip!

A few of my college buddies and I are getting ready to make a trip to Oak Orchard and do some fishing sometime this fall. I was wonderin what the best time of the year to make a trip is, and also what to use, we will be spin fishing for the majority of the time...I am also bring my fly rod up to. There are salmon that run in Oak Orchard also right? I have only fished the Ontario Tribs once and i was 12...lol...so any advice or help is appreciated!

Thanks

Mid October is usually a good time to hit it, good mix of browns and salmon. I've always fly fished the Oak and did well on nuke eggs, glo bugs, and buggers. The spin guys seem to do well on egg sacks.

I would wait until late Oct. 0r early Nov. for a better mixed bag if I were to make the trip. Try fishing near the lake with spinners & spoons. The Oak is some bigger slow moving water. Don't go near the dam Try & hit some of the smaller streams around the area & might not see another fisherperson all day.

PSB;  Don't wait until Nov. if you want to try for Kings, unless you like to fish for something that is half-dead. Very few fresh fish , Salmon, at that time. For a mixed bag of Kings and Browns the 3 rd. week of Oct. or even the 2 nd. week are good. Earlier you will have more Kings and less Browns. This is my two cents from past trips. There are some smaller streams in the area to get away from the crowds. Johnson's Creek and Marsh are smaller with less fish and less fishermen.

Reminder; To all who are thinking about a trip to the Oak in mid Oct.  There will be a fishing contest going on at the Archer's Club on Oct. 21, 22, and 23. It may be more crowded than normal at that time.

I just got back from a trip to the Oak Orchard.  The Kings are starting to come in.  I managed to hook and land one in about 4 hours of fishing.  It however was not fair hooked.  They are a tough catch.  The dam is amazing.  I could sit there and watch those redneck hillbillies snag fish all day.  I saw more camo there than waders, and I even saw a guy wading in neoprene boot-foot waders with white tennis shoes for wading boots.  It was an awesome time seeing those 30+ pound fish coming out of the water like dolphins when they were coming up stream.

I just got back from Oak Orchard.  It is a nice place and I managed one King that went 37 inches (20 lbs. 8 oz.).  I know it's not a monster, but it was quite a fight.  That thing deep throated my lure and by the time I got the lure out, there wasn't much life left in the thing.  The good news is that I have a lot of salmon to eat.

Well, I am fortunate to have a wife that can really cook.  She can make anything taste good, so if the salmon from there are that bad, it will test her skills.

Well, summer salmon from the lake might be a different story, but I've tried kings from oak orchard in october and it was inedible. For me anyway. Never tried it smoked.

    Awesome avitar !

The kings are fun, but I like the brownies better.. But both are fun. Later in the year you'll get some Cohos and Steelies as well. You never know a few Atlantics are caught every year as well.
