Need advice on a spinning rod for salmon

I need to get a spinning rod for salmon as last year i was grossly under gunned with too light of a rod. I was looking at both 8'6'' and 9' models. The rest of the specs are pretty much the same (i.e. lure weight rating, power, line rating, etc.) What would the choice be with you guys on the Salmon river if you were in the market for a new salmon spinning rod? Thanks!

Not into the spinning rods much anymore, but the length is good and look at those rated for 8lb to 15lb line or there about.

Thanks. So what would your preference be the 8.5 or the 9' model. i know it's not much of a difference but I have to make a choice here?

One thing to keep in mind is that you will want a noodle rod in the 10' to 12' range rated with a high line weight. I have a loomis 11' float rod weighted in the 8lb to 12lb range. It put a womping on salmon and wasn't too heavy (I thought) for steelhead. It hasn't been out of its rod case in years as I no longer am a floatie.

Length is important, but a good noodle rod will help you out greatly (IMHO).

Good advice from Foxfire! I have 7 or 8 noodles ranging from 8'6" to 10'6" but all are rated for either 8 or 10 lb line max. These setups are quite sufficient to handle kings, 'hos and chrome.
Also good advice from mktrout, avoid Ugly Sticks! They weigh entirely too much and will wear your arm out in no time if you're spending all day on the river!

Ugly sticks might be a little heavy but they are almost indestructible and fairly cheap.
I have at least 7 noodle rods including an Ugly Stick, Lamiglas, St Croix, G Loomis, Okuma, Cabelas,  and a Gander Mountain.

The noodle rods I use most are the 2 cheapest
    Ugly Stick Medium action 9'
Guide Series 9 1/2' medium action

    Each was around $40

I bought a 8' 6"St Croix Wild River rod like 3 years ago, this rod is good for the Salmon, lots of backbone to getum out of the current so the guys around you arent waiting forever for you to finesse your fish in. Noodle rods are fun and give you range, but your probably not the only guy fishin that spot who drove 9 hours to do so. Stood there last year for 45 minutes watchin a guy finessing a 20 lber in using like 13 foot noodle rod ,which looked more like a whip, just to finally break off his 6 lb test, alot of peaved people to the left and right

On the other side of noodle rods........be sure not to go too heavy or with too fast an action.  I used a 8.5 foot MH rod from Bass Pro.  It had an extra-fast action...... stiff from butt to tip and I broke off many fish on the first run using 10 or 12 pound leader.  Backbone with a softer tip has worked for me.  I am building a 10 foot rod on a Cabelas blank for this year.  Can't wait!!  3 weeks from tomorrow!!
