Moving to Albany from PA

Hello everyone.  Have been enjoying all the posts and fish porn that you guys have been putting up the last few weeks after I learned I will be moving to Albany in 6 months or so.  I guess I'll tell you all a little about myself...I'm 22, from Pittsburgh, going into my last semester of college.  My major is along the lines of Radiology, and I am to complete 6 months of unpaid clinical training at the Albany Medical Center downtown after next semester ends in December.  I have fished my whole life, from trout to carp to walleye and most things in between.  I will be broke as a joke, because I will be working full time for nothing and fishing is one thing I will be doing alot of once the ice melts.  There are a few species that I would like to be able to get on the end of my line that I have yet to in PA,and the Albany area seems to have endless opportunities within a 2 hour radius from what I have read over the last few weeks.  The goals I have for my 6 months in Albany are as follows:  -A musky  - A Hudson river striper. - Wild brown, rainbow, and brookie -Chain Pickeral - And a pike that isnt a hammer handle.  I guess I am just looking for as much info as possible that will put me on some of these fish.  Whether it be a lake name, stream name, type of lure/bait, or anything that you think could help.  I am not looking to be spoon fed, as I know how to catch fish if they are around, but I am completly clueless as even where to start from.  You all sound like a great group from everything I have seen and I am looking forward to reading the responses.  Thanks in advance, and maybe I'll see some of you on the water sometime next spring!

AFTER THE ICE MELTS??????? There is fish under that stuff you know....lol. Lakers, browns, rainbows, pike, walleye, salmon not to mention if you like pannies perch, crappy and bluegills all can be fished through the ice. Don't limit yourself, fishing is a year round sport. Anyways, I'm sure you will be able to get plenty of tips and advice here. Best group on the net.

Welcome to the area, anytime before you go fishing just drop a thread on where or what you are thinking about and these guys give honest opinions.

Wecome to the board. I'll tell you what I did when I first moved here. I bought a book called the "Sportsmen's Connection". There are different books for different regions of New York, and they come jam packed with information from contour maps, to directions, to access, to fishing tips on most waters. My favorite water to fish is the Mohawk River. It's got everything but trout. I mostly target walleye, but hook up with all sorts of panfish, bass, channel cats, and once in a while pike. There are tiger muskies, but I have yet to hook up with one.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

Hook, gotta agree with you the mohawk can be awesome. upstream it is a trout stream that is open all year, and if you know a few secret spots they are well downstream as well. My buddy landed a 26" brown in one spot that usually yields a couple of browns every year. But the smallie and wallies are king of the river.

also a fine welcome to the area. you say you'll be moving here in Dec right ? for 6 months ? only ?
If so you will hit the prime of our fishing.. first thing I’d do is look to the Ontario tribs for steelhead & browns, if you can handle the cold weather fishing (lol). that will be your first shot at some big trout...
Next up will be northern Ice, yea Ice baby... We had a little gathering in Dec on an ADK lake (about 1 & 1/2 hrs from Albany) . It gave up pike, pickerel, walleye & a perch( lol 79 ) . A great place for early Ice.... Don't count out the Ice if you want pike or musky. From then on out it will be about the Ice , unless you wish to fish steelhead. Our area (ADK's) has some of the best ice fishing anywhere (IMO). Trout, Salmon, Pike, Musky & Panfish... There are always some of us walking on water..

If it just ain't (is that a word? ) your bag shame on you, try it you'll like it...

Now comes spring, well still 3 foot of snow up in the Ontario tribs but March & April is where its at ... Steelhead !!!!
May , whew, May . one of my busiest times of fishing. The ponds open up around 2nd week and brookies are the target, by the 3rd week the ADK streams are prime for trout. If you are looking for brookies , pond fishing is the way to go. A new NYS record was just set 2 weeks ago on a Franklin co. pond.
Pike & Musky are also open , the Mohawk River is a good choice depending on flow (run-off) .The Rotterdam & Crescent (sp) are some good locations (from boat).
Stripers are just starting in the Hudson and by the 3rd week usually full force. You have some serious decision making in May.
June: for me it's all ADK's trout, trout and yup.....

    Time up yet ?

keep checking back or ask for advice, I'm not scared to offer some great locations in a PM, but some places I'd have to blind fold you to take you there (lol) just kidding......

Ice fishin???? mmmm man I know I see people out their on it even trucks at times, But Im a southern boy and it's tough for me to walk out there. I did 3 yrs ago, the guy said its 9" thick but half way out a crack shot from one end of lake to the other right past my feet he turned to say somethin and I was on hands and knees crawlin faster than jiggers ona dog for the bank, he was laughin at me but that crack was loud and long. He talked me back out but when I drilled my first ice hole I thought man! this is like sitting on a limb and cuttin it off between me and the tree.
Every time I heard a crack i jumped up ready to run. But! if theres fish like that to be had I'll just have to try it again. shiverrrrrrrr lol

Thanks for the responses...all sound like good info.  Tuna- I know its not quite as brutal as Ontario, but I've fished for steelhead in Erie in the middle of January so I'm no stranger to the cold in 30mph winds.  I have never fished on ice before, so looks like I will have get my feet wet during my stay(no pun intended).  I'll be living in Albany from mid December through mid August, which gives me the complete fishing season minus the fall runs on the Ontario tribs .  Also, any suggestions on where NOT to live in Albany?  I will probably be getting a place through craigslist , and don't want to end up in the heart of a ghetto for 7 months.  Thanks again for all the help!

All good spots! Welcome to the club! As far as living up here, try 1 of the surrounding areas by Albany. Latham comes to mind. I lived there for 11 years, it's only a hop to Albany and it apartments are a little easier to find. If you want to stay close to Albany, there are plenty of neighborhoods that are not set directly in the downtown settings. Try http://www.rentersguidealbany.com/

As for fishing, there is plenty of great spots all within a short drive or even walk from Albany and the surroundings. Once you get up here, drop a line, there is always someone willing to fish and show people around.

so that pinging echoing noise in the ice is a good, good to know, I'll have to get used to it cause being able to just walk on water and fish at your feet has got to be cool. plan on trying a lot of it this winter. thx

    ok back to the thread,
I'm not much of a city guy but have been in or played at most bars in Albany. There are some very good joints there. New Scotland ave. is good and close to the Med. center. but probably most pricy, upper Maddison ave. aint bad, Jay street, Hudson & Willet are ok, all upper Albany.
I would make a list of appts. and take a weekend to scout them out. Most upper Albany is ok. But it is all inner city no matter where you end up.

Hi BW-  I'm sure you'll enjoy our fishing up here and the crew on this board is the absolute best.
As for living in Albany... I would avoid these zip codes (close to downtown or ghettos) 12202, 12207, 12210.  Some parts of course are OK in these zips but for the most part....ehhh no.  If you are working at AMC, you're in the 12208 zip. Thats a nice area for the most part, better as you head away from Madison Ave.  This from a Postal guy.
Colonie, Loudonville, Guilderland are pricier areas, it's cheaper to get a place in Watervliet, Menands, Rensselaer or other nearby cities/villages.
