Chippewa Bay 1000 Islands Region

Headed up to chippewa bay the 22nd for a fishing trip before my next deployment to Iraq. Has anyone ever fished this area before? If so howd it go and how is the lake? Ie weedy, deep, shallow...Were going to be trolling for musky/northern and spin castin for bass, maybe throw a deep jib in here and there for walleye, all information greatly appreciated! Ben

If no-one in the boat has spent time up there, first thing to do is buy a chart.  There are 1000 islands that you can see, but 5000 shoals that you can't and almost none are marked. The bay itself is weed bottom and shallow 3 to no more than 6 feet, once you go outside of the islands toward the main river it gets deeper.

Pike - Troll the back side of oak island for pike in 20 feet+ or  Cast spoons, spinnerbaits, etc inside the bay area over the weeds, and any drop off areas you can find. manzinita island is good.

LMB - depending on the size of your boat hit Chippewa creek, goes back for miles and they're in there.  The water is fairly high right now so you should be able to make it fine with any boat up to 18-20 feet. Have also done well around garden island.

Walleye - only see them on occasion, but you can try at Chippewa Point, theres always a few people out there and the view of the castle is great.

The river is great, but don't overlook the other water around the area, like Black Lake.

PS...if you plan to keep fish - check the regulations, the minimums are different than some statewide regs.
