Chicken livers

Does anyone have any good tips on keeping chicken livers on the hook? I have a lot of trouble keeping it from flying off during the cast.

I tie sacks made of old panty hose(not mine)sort of like egg sacks.Tie up a dozen or so,you can freeze what you don't use for next time.I stick the hook through so that the point is exposed, as the cats don't seem to mind. You can use it this way with a float also. I make mine about the size of a 1/2 dollar. This is also a good way to use velveeta cheese. Also I squeeze it before I cast it out.  sam

its kinda like hooking worms, i usually just try to put the hook through the liver as many times as i can.  i've also tried freezing the entire container of livers, then just cutting off a chunk and putting it on the hook while its still frozen, seems to work well.

Buy some soft mesh fabric from the fabric section at Wal-Mart or any fabric store. It,s cheap.Cut it into about 3 or 4 inch squares.put the liver in the center then tie the top with a small piece of string. Will stay on hook indefinitely.Soak it fairly often in the blood from your liver container.

    Atlas "Magic Thread"

Atlas' "Magic Thread" makes sac tying easier and faster. Just turn three times around the stem of the sac, pull tightly; three more turns and pull tightly again. That's all. No knotting is required! This thread is simple and effective.

It is also an excellent bait saver - wrap around bait on the hook or lure to hold bait on longer. This works great with baits such as shrimp, herring, sardine, salmon and steelhead roe, crayfish and minnows.

I never had a prob. with them swallowing the nylon as it usualy sticks on the hook even after landing the fish. How ever I would assume that they could pass it if they did.Remember to properly discard any used material when you leave, so as not to leave any litter like those **** blue liver containers laying around.  sam

I use that tool also. I like to make the sacks at home ,then when you go to use them on site you don't even have to get your hands all messy. helps to keep the bugs off, also doesn't change the taste of my Red Man Golden Blend as much.lol   sam

Mr. Crappie,   At my fishing spot I give the Chicken Livers to the mother-in-law and the Red Man to the fish.  They just float to the top. Don't need panty hose or hooks. Works for me!

Freeze your liver....I mean freeze your chicken livers. If you freeze them they "seem" to get tuffer. It's all relative when you talking about slimy livers. They seem to stay on the hook durn the cast better.Don't try to hook them while their froze soiled, but 1/2 froze works best.Get yourself a good treble hook (size 1-2)large enough to get like 1/2 an liver on.Now lob cast this set up where you want.Often you'll get some of your liver back (connective tissues, etc) just bait over this til it builds up enough you'll want to clean your hook. When you do reel in, the liver that does fall off becomes a good chum line...

i dont have any problems just throwing it on a hook....i mean ya cant toss it 100 yards but it works. i do try to work the hook into the muscle area cuz its a lil tougher then the actual meat (liver)

Use circle hooks in the 2/0 range and stick the hook threw it a couple times but dont make it mush an dont throw it hard.I fish without any weight and can throw about 40 yards with a good piece.

use a long shank hook and snell it near the bend with the line passing through the eye, put your liver on the hook and pass some through the space provived by your line. cinch tight and cast, or make "nut sacks" with netting ala egg sacks.

I take mine and drain the fluid from the container and add LOTS of salt and let sit for a while. they will really toughen up. Saw it done on a charter boat before with squid have been doing it ever since with livers.

I just put half a tub of liver in my blender and made juice out of it. I poured in salt, a touch of garlic and a whole 3-4oz bottle of Berkly Gulp fish attractant.  Stir it up and then thicken to a sticky paste with flour.

It was my first attempt at making dough bait and I smashed the catfish with them.  My average soak time was one third of my best day ever!!

Total cost of the dough bait was around $4, and I had like 4 cups or more.  That will last WAY longer than even 2 or 3 tubs of regular liver.

I believe the pureed liver has a much stronger scent trail and the flour will allow it to "time release".  The fish attractant adds a hefty dose of "cut bait" odor to it.  I could not be more pleased with how well it worked, considering I have never even gotten a bite on the 5 different packaged dough baits that I have tried.

I really didnt have too much trouble.  I was using a treble hook with a spring on it, a "dough bait hook".  I wasn't super impressed with the hook b/c I got snagged a couple times,  but if you wrapped the dough around the spring, it stuck well enough to cast it as far as I wanted.

The next time I go, I will try to use a single hook and see how it works.  My longest stretch between fish was a 5 minute soak time and at that point, about half my dough was disolved.  I dont mind rebaiting frequently with the dough though, because the ball is small, about the size of a grape, and half a tub of liver, mixed into the dough makes ALOT more bait than just a tub of liver.

I hate losing liver b/c there aren't that many in a bucket and one liver can fill up a smaller fish, probably.  The bait goes alot further, with better success it seems, when it is in dough form.

I made up a concoction similar to Hillbillies (What a gooey mess!!) I wrapped a wad in sacing material and when I hook it up I use a minnie threading needle. Tie a loop on the end of the line, hook it in the eye of the needle, run it thru the wad of gunk, put on a treble hook and cast away. Seems to work pretty well.
