carp on yum grubtail

Today I went down to elk creek close to the tip to try for some smallies and possible channel cats and started out with a 3" Yum grubtail on a jighead..i worked it up and down and all of asudden i hooked something really big. i thought i had a big catfish at first but it surfaced a minute later and it was a 33" carp that im guessing was around 16 pounds..i was using 10 pound power pro line with the gruntail..it was about a 5 minute fight..i caught a few smallies and big rock bass as well..has anyone else caught carp on artificals like that before?

I think the yum products also have the attractant inpregnated into them also? Big product in carp fishing now are artificials but they are more along the lines of baits used. We have sweet corn, field corn, tiger nuts, puffs, boilies(ball looking bait) maggots, bloodworms and a ton more both flavored and unflavored in all different colors. They work very well. Some float and some don't so when you add a floating one with your regular bait they balance and hover about an inch above the bottom so when a carp sucks it in there is less resistance and a better chance of a hookset.

the carp are starting to spawn and get aggressive during this time.  I have caught quite a few carp while bottom bouncing for bass mainly on smaller lures and plastics as mentioned.  Always a fun surprise kinda sucks when you think its a monster bass and ends up being a carp though haha.

Kastmasterpro, To me it seems weird to be fishin the tribs for anything but steelhead! If the family goes to Erie for the weekend soon, i'll try to make time to toss a few jigs in Elk creek and see what happens!

i mean i use nymphs and other flies for carp on the bayfront all the time but i didnt know they are carnivors..i always thought they eat plant life..yeah they are so easy to catch fly fishing..use 8-15 pound tippet pending on size of fly..and just slowly move your fly in a school of them and its a pleasant suprise getting acouple 20-30 pounders in a day..they fight harder than steelies no doubt and if you use a 5-7 weight fly rod it makes a better fight..iv had several take me into my line backing which is no problem in open water fishing..and they are easy to set the hook on

That is one common thing people always believe about carp is they eat plantlife. That would be a white armur or grass carp and not a common carp. Its one of those if you hear if enough on the internet it must be true. lol I have a few friends that flyfish for them and I hear its really catching on with the fly guys. I have a fun time fishing for them. I haven't had any other fish to date that rips out the line like they do and the fight is awesome.

When carp are actively feeding, they'll hit **** near anything.
I once caught one on a cigarette butt (I kid you not)-----musta been fishing in the smoking section.

I actually have a pack of the Yum small crawfish that I specifically bought a while back to try for carp with, just ain't got around to trying them yet.

actually i found out the other day i only caught 1 carp..apparently to are quillback suckers..i've caught two on grubtails..i like using my homemade flies for them because i can make a variety of flies that work and carp arent picky on eating them..i've caught some big carp on flies..sometimes they'll take me to my line backing..its fun on a hot some day wading into the bay in erie..its almost like fishing bonefish

I catch them on ultra light stuff all the time in creeks, that's the way to do it. And my friend caught one on a trout magnet before, hit that thing and took of like a rocket.

I caught the biggest carp I've ever seen before on a 7'' blue/silver rapala at Shawnee about 15 years ago.
You wanna talk about being disgusted when that came to the top of the water.

And yes it was hooked about 4 inches deep in the mouth not snagged.

I have also caught carp (twice) on a floating Rapala (not snagged either, in the mouth).  I usually use one size smaller than the seven inch though, 5 & 3/4 inches i think.  And I too, (although I have nothing against carp) was disapointed when I saw them

Odd things I have caught carp on and usally very large ones  Black jig w pork frog trailer, texas rigged plastic worms, salmon eggs, bottom bouncers w/ a crawler harness, chicken livers.
Plus in stocked trout streams usally smaller carp meal worms, redworms wax worms, salmon egg flavored powerbait small colorado spinners with a piece of worm on the hook. mickey finn pattern streamers.

Plus probally some other things that i cant remember. As pacarper says you might make incendently catches on anything.

I just throw carp back however, if my cousins need some fertilizer for there farm or some foreigners want them I give them to them. O yeah I made a really productive fly for carp its pretty deadly. Use a cream colored egg flie pattern and tie some puffy white strands on the back and they suck those up like candy whe nworked really slow

can't wait til the steelies run again! get to say the best two words put together in fishing "fish on!"
