Big weekend

I finally can contribute by giving a report.

Started on Friday in the Catskills.  Fished the Esopus early and the Schoharie late- Nothing.  Caught a hatch on the Schoharie, but no fish were rising.  I have to admit that I really didn't give it my all; probably had to do with the cold beer and warm hospitality that was waiting at the cabin.

Woke up and took the run up to Wilmington with the intention of fishing a hike in pond.  I made it to the pond the pond only to find it un-fishable due to the wind.  So, onto the Au Sable which was really high.  No luck there, however I did see a wormburner haul in a beautiful rainbow.  After a fridgid  night camping, I awoke to kielbasa and eggs and decided to break camp and head south.

Hit the Schroon with much success.  It was a blast- so much so that I am headed back tomorrow.  Hope it is more of the same!

Don't feel bad about the catskill streams, they were definalty slower this weekend. Spent all day down there saturday and only saw a handfull of fish rise. personally I only landed one, a beaut 19" bow that almost had me to my backing twice, and missed 2 others.

Good to hear you got some in the dacks. Never fished the Schroon, but have heard good things.

The Schroon seems to evoke a lot of different emotions in a lot of my angling friends...

I, for one, love that river...  On a good June day you can wear yourself right out on rainbows in there!

But lots of guys I fish with seem to be less fond of it.  It does get some pressure in June when the bugs are in full effect, but nothing close to the pounding of any of the southern streams.  I almost always stop to toss a nymph in Chestertown when I am passing thru and typically a 12" rainbow is pretty easy to come by.  I am convicned that the Schroon and Indian Rivers get a different strain of 'bows...  They look more like Cutties to me somehow...  Bright rosy red cheeks and lots of color.  I think the Warren County Hatchery might stock both streams in addition to the State DEC plantings...

Maybe that has something to do with it?

Did your fish look like this little guy?

Not really sure why but hatchery fish get much more colorfull when they are young, I worked in a hatchery for some time and I still don't know why.

If I was a little more ambitious I'd post the pic of the bow I got this weekend from the delaware and its much lighter than that fish.

Yep, they all looked similar. Today was even better- 8 fish in less than two hours.  I am one of those guys that feels the way you do; that river is awesome!  I truly don't understand why there are so many nay-sayers.

RE: Big weekend 2009/05/04 18:18:56 (permalink)
Yeah- it's a good one...  I've been wanting to float a section or two of the Schroon the past two seasons- maybe this year will be the one!

I guess what I meant by the 'strains' of rainbows in the Schroon is that even the little guys look different than similar sized fish out of the Beaverkill, Kaydeross, Brant Lake and the hike-in ponds (air stocked by the DEC) that I like to fish up that way...

Warren County runs its own hatchery in Warrensburg (managed by the town Dept of Public Works) to supplement the DEC stockings...  They raise brookies and rainbows for the region, and apparently stock portions of Hamilton County as well.

Bugger- do you have any idea if they may raise different rainbows than the state?  From my research last year upon discovering the different appearance of the local fish there- it sounds like the State uses both a "domestic" strain of 'bows as well as a "Chambers Creek" strain...  Those fish are really colorful too- but vastly different that the Schroon/Indian/Mill Creek fish I tend to find all summer.

The Catskill trout (and Finger Lakes) trout are typically lighter (more silver) and lacking the distinct rosy cheekplate.  Of course, the Esopus trout have their own look too, being 'wild', and are truly "silver bullets" instead of the dark mossy green the Warren fish posses.

It's been driving me crazy trying to figure out the difference.  No complaints, of course, it just seems like Warren County's local hatchery is producing fish that just LOOK cooler than the others.  They fight the same, feed the same, and appear to grow the same- but look different.

Here's one more example from a fish Madison got in November while we were up that way (not the Schroon- but Warren County still).  Do you notice a difference or is it all in my head?

One of these days I will bite the bullet and take a few minutes to ask the guys in Warrensburg...  It's just hard to steal away 30min from fishing up there sometimes!!!  Regardless- way to get 'em on the Schroon!

By the way- my buddy said he's caught some landlockers below the lake too.  I might have to check out that section sometime and see what's shaking!!!

    Cool Matt...
Looks like the fishing was good to you on Schroon. Now you need to show us the Fish Porn, thats what we drool for (LOL)
sucks about the pond i'll be on it weds night & thurs and a few others until sunday. If the wind is up I'll be going deeper to some other ponds in the area that are sheltered and smaller. For me it will be all about brook trout this week.

Schroon, I'm a Nay-Say...but thats me, if it works for you thats GREAT!!!!

    Tuna,
I can definitely see where there are more enticing places than the Schroon for a person of you knowledge and skill.  In fact, those places are more enticing to me as well.  But for me, living in Ballston Spa, the Schroon just happens to be really convenient and it fishes well to.  It was awesome to finally catch some this year.

I will work on the fish porn!

The reason why is got posted is simple, people arguing with the land owners. My favorite spot down by the gauging station was posted because one of the local guides got into an arguement with the landowner who was trying to be friendly.

I know the guide pretty well and he is stuborn. Should be a clear message, respect everyone in the outdoors, you never know when your talking to the guy who could put an end to your enjoyment.

Always loved the Esopus when I lived in Rockland County.  At that time (60's) the Esopus had some really nice rainbows spawning in the Spring.  Maybe now that the Schoharie Creek feed is repaired it has started to improve, but I've heard it continues to be hit and miss.
May give the Schroon a try as it's just 25 minutes up the Northway from my home.  Also going to go back to Pee Pee Pond for a shot at some northerns before the weeds set up.

Kids had a lot of lacrosse games this weekend so I couldn't go out on the bass boat.  Thought the weekend would amount to nothing until I took 30 minutes Friday after dropping son off at pre-game to fish the local river before going to his game.  I was at the same river 4 days before with no luck at all except a big swish of water as a long fish ate some smaller fish near shore twenty feet downstream.  Exciting as it was, I stayed that day for an hour after and still no luck.  So this particular 30 minutes was just for the sake of fishin and killing time as I wasn't sure my luck would be any different.  I took my youngest boy whom was fishing with me when stood at the spot from those few days before and used my favorite #2 mepps red and white spinner.  I use an ultra lite pole since the water is no deeper than 3 feet at its deepest points.  When luck hit me as I caught and fought a 30.5 inch Musky.  I released it back but not until we took a pic.  Big Weekend for sure.

Thanks guys.  The UL pole is what makes it even more exciting.  A little embarassed to say that I acted like a little kid at christmas when I was fighting it hoping to pull it in.

I always feel more alive when I am throwing my pole into a wet spot.

This weekend Eagle Crg and I will be going to various secret spots we like to fish in the Adirondacks.  After this trip we will see who has the bragging rights.  Stay tuned for pictures of who catches what and how many.  Of course, we always return all that we catch for others to enjoy on future trips.  Our biggest concern this time of year is getting Eagle Crg in and out of the boat without tipping it due to his large frame.
Hopefully our hiking trips won't be longer than three miles in so he can take a nap along the way.  Pee Pee Pond was on our list, but we were concerned it would be too crowded after all the publicity it received this past winter and it isn't very remote.  Sargeant's Pond or Squaw Lake might be more to our liking and more remote.

    Adirondack Trip:

Ended up with two day hike to Silver Lake/Canary Pond, but not much luck.  Then on to Bridgebrook Pond - again not much action, but very cold (one morning 26 degrees).
After that we decided to go on to private lakes near Lou's camp and then we started to catch fish.  Eagle Crg got first rainbow about 16" and a few smallmouths.  That night I got my first rainbow of only 15".  Next morning we tried Massaweepie and I finally got off the snide with a 24" laker, but not much more.  Following morning we got up at 6am to 22 degree weather and decided to wait until 7am to try Massaweepie again, but no luck except for smallmouth bass.
Next day the weather got warm and the black flies got into the action.  Finally some success, but not by us.  A guest from Boston got a nice 16 lb. 4 oz laker that he will have mounted from one of our two private lakes.  Overall I would say Eagle Crg outfished me, but not by much and mostly by casting to smallmouth bass on the shoreline.

eagle, I will be stationed at Pee Pee all weekend with side trips to some ponds that I'm sure I'll not see another angler. When I booked pee pee last week it had PLENTY of openings so I would expect it to be 1/2 > 3/4 full.

A 16# laker shoot thats a monster and would love to see the Pics (hope they are digital, LOL)

after this weekend we'll see who catches what and how many, sorry Jimmy but I'm fishing familiar waters now (LOL, last week was AWESOME)

Sargeant's Pond , while it is back there it don't stop the float planes and the publicity it got from the monster brookie ?  Hardly a secret place.
For me those Very Large , over 50 acre ponds are not really on my short list.

Stay tuned for fish Porn !!!!!
