Catching big bluegills in summer

Just wondering, on what to look for like depths and or structure in the summer time (june-July).

I was thinking on using a minnow with a float or a jig, any thoughts on this, as I have no problems cathing small sunfish but I just got a boat so I want to try to get some bigger fisah this year?

When they come off the beds, you have to go deeper. Weed edges in 8 foot plus water. Dropoffs, humps, submerged stumps.

I second that. The outer weed edge is the most likely (though not only) place to find bruisers as the summer wears on. Minnows are a good way to get them, but small leeches will take nice sized gills too. Don't forget the ugly little back bays though. A spot with nice structure adjacent to deep water will bring them in during low light periods.

I frequently catch giant bull gills while walleye fishing in the summer period on lakes with the little devils in them.  Try trolling a bottom bouncer, small spinner, on a two-hook harness with 1/4 to 1/2 a nightcrawler.  Weed edges are good, but try and find where you have deep weed edges along with rock.  My biggest gills come out of 16 to 22 feet rocky areas, there happens to be weeds up shallower in the same areas.

If you have or can get permission for any decent farm ponds they usually hold a lot of nice sized panfish since they don't get that much pressure. I know a few of these where you can go basically anytime of year and shore fish and get 'em as quick as you can unhook them. As far as public water's I agree w/ what these guys mentioned.
