frencj creek is a fun place to float.  not only for the fishing but the solitude, scenery and wild life is great.  i like to float a section between rt6 and cambridge springs.  we have friends that own property so they let us stay there.

Are there any maps available on floating and do they give an idea on time.   We are thinking of floating June 28th and 29th Yes Sunday and Monday.

Jim, I am not aware of any maps of French Creek. In regard to times, I would call Country Pedalers 814-432-8055. You may even be able to make shuttle arrangements with them. I believe they used to have some sort af rates for people with their own boats. If in fact they do, you could park at the bike trail parking lot. Country Pedalers is about 100 yds upstream. Obviously I have no idea whether or not you know where Country Pedalers is located. Incase you don't, they are no more than 1/4 mile below the confluence of French Creek and the Allegheny River, which is in the lower end of Franklin. The bike trail parking lot is only 100 to 200 yds downstream from Country Pedalers. It is public property, there is no fee to park there,no time limit either. I wouldn't be afraid to leave a car there for multiple days. Because of the bike trail there is plenty of activity. ( Not likely anyone would be up to anything they shouldn't be with so much activity ) It even gets an occasional drive thru by the local police dept. Last but not least, it would be extremely easy to identify from the water. Just below the confluence there is a bridge across the river( rt. 322 going east out of Franklin ), on the east side of the river (left),Country Pedalers is just above the bridge, the bike trail parking lot is just below the bridge. There also happens to be a launch/takeout at the parking lot for the bike trail.

As for the drop in the creekbed at Polly's.... After approx. 30 years worth of wading around it, and floating over it, I would have to say it is simply the end of Flatrock ( it's local name ), a very long slab of rock which makes up the creek bottom. If you stay to the far left ( within a couple feet of shore ) you should get thru without any trouble. Most of the people that get into trouble here, do so by staying in the middle of the creek. It is more of a slope than a drop. It's probably no more than 3 ft. change in elevation at not quite 45 degrees. The water below the drop is not all that deep and there are some rather large pieces of rubble that have broke of from the end of the slab. It seems that most people get into trouble when they go over (anywhere but way left) the bow hits one of those pieces of rubble, the stern swings around ( while still on the slope )and over they go.

I would have to agree with Andy, there is some fine fishing from Polly's downstream. I live 3 blocks from the creek in that end of town. In turn I spend a lot of evenings wading that water. There are some fine fish to be found between Polly's and the confluence. With the creek at the height ( or lack there of ) that it is right now, yes you may drag a time or two. If you can read the water fairly well, you can usually find a line that will get you thru. If you do get hung up, you can normally wiggle or push yourself off. Worst case scenario, if you have to drag, it shouldn't be more than a few yards at most.

Let us now what you decide. I just aquired a brand new Old Town Discovery 119. I hope to start training it in the next couple of days. A full day float would surely help it learn the ways of the Smallmouth.

FYI guys it was not Country Peddlers that rented the canoes to the group that lost the girl a couple years ago, that place is has just reopened under new management. Frenchcreek is the best, fish it several times a week and it gets better every year.

Keep your powder, martinis and trout flies dry.

Has anyone seen French in the last couple days?  I'm wondering if it's muddy.  I looked at the gauge, seems like it was pretty high a week ago, and I know it takes a long time to clear out.

It's still fairly stirred up, but the levels right...looks perfect to me. Seems like by the time it clears up the flow's too low.

Didn't get out last night but just got back from a couple hours this am.Could'nt get more than a few taps, but the sunrise and a Bald Eagle flying thru downtown Franklin were cool. The creek is still cloudy, but should be clearing soon.I think that if you are planning on a float you should be able to see structure better than i can wading at this point.
Good luck and Great Fishin to ya,

Clearing up good from what I could tell driving over in Carlton this morning. I could make out bottom structure for the first time this week. Good luck.
