Grannom Caddis

Anybody have pattern suggestions for Grannoms on the Little J.? I got a dark chocolate dubbing for the body, green cdc for the egg laying sac and dark cdc for the wing. Is that good? And what about emergers and pupae? Any suggestions on those would be greatly appreciated.

I was just tying some pupa and larva. I'll post a pic of what I tie.

For the adult, I tie a natural cdc wing over a black or very dark brown body. Some with an egg sack, and some without. On some of the dries, i'll tie in a short clear zlon shuck about the same lenth as the hook shank. For the egglayers, I tie a beadhead soft hackle with an bright green egg sack.

    My tulip doesnt work...

Nice looking flies, though, drake!  In the next few weeks, with the weather finally figuring out that it's January, I'm going to really try to expand my ability in tying, and caddis are the main bug on most streams I fish, so I may try some of these.

cold, when tying caddis dries you might want to add some head cement or glue on the shaft where you'll tie the deer hair in. this will keep the deer/elk hair from spinning on the hook when fishing.

bear hair makes a great grannom for the wing.

    Jer,
In the link I attached, there is a video by Hans Weilenmann of a caddis pattern.
Half way through the video, it shows a quick easy way of winging the caddis with hair.
I've been doing it this way for a couple of years using only three turns of thread. Amazingly, the hair stays put very well.

You'll want to learn soft hackles and sparkle pupas if you've got a lot of caddis.... and maybe read Caddisflies by G. Lafontaine. Best book on caddis.

ignore the olive thread on the egg layer. I ran out of black, which is what I typically use.

i use black bear hair for the dry wing. in the clarion some caddis i seen have a distinct bluish egg sack. i tie the egg layers just like the dries i tie but i'll have to try the wet fly egg layer this year. great pics

Drake posted probably the best patterns for grannoms on the J.   The area shops seem to tie grannoms with deer hair.   CDC is superior, no doubt about it.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

The soft hackled egg layer is a killer. I drop it off a adult with a deer hair wing, since deer hair seems to float a dropper better. I tie the egg layer with a bead and soft hackle since some caddis dive to lay their eggs.

Does the black bear float well? I've never tried it.

the bear hair floats ok as long as you palmer a stiff short hackle over the body. i suppose you can mix it with drk. elk hair for better flotation and still keep the darker black wing color. once wet it takes longer to dry though. this is the grannom i've used on the big neshanook with great success. it also works as a searching pattern during the warm season. i guess it resembles an ant or any small black bug. ~dt
