black bear doesn't have the buoyancy as deer hair. since i use mostly natural fur, hair etc. tying material i use bear hair quite a bit. i use it as an underwing on some streamers and on cricket imitations. it also makes a great grannom caddis fly but once wet they take longer to dry than deer hair caddis. they are not bad for natural looking legs on insect patterns instead of the plastics and rubber they sell. i don't use it as much as i used to do to the fact my bear rug is starting to show bare spots.

grey fox underbody fur can be used for any wet/nymph pattern that calls for that color. fox fur absorbs water so i wouldn't recommend this for dry fly application.

I tie in a touch of bear hair on the tail section of my darker buggers before tying in the maribou.  It helps keep the maribou "up".  You don't want a lot of it, but just a very little.
