I just got a Pflueger President 6730 for Chirstmas, I cant wait to try it out. I'm gonna put some Gamma Copolymer 4# or 6# on it. That stuff is strong, I tried to break it and it cut my hands lol.

Okuma Epixor is good for the money.  The drag is waterproof and it can take a beating.  I would get the 30 model.

So far, the best reel I've owned...smooth as silk all around!

The pflueger is also a good choice, I own four medalists, and they work great for the money.

    No TEX ,
He'd have to equip it with 6lb P-Line 100% fluorocarbon & some of my hand tied spawn patterns to wipe em out. Good choice on the pfluger I love my medalist ultra smooth . Now go tear em up .

Love the old Mitchell 300's and Cardinal 3's from way back. Still fish em' to this day from time to time as well as a few of my buds. As far as new stuff goes, Diawa makes a tough reel. The Shimano Sustain is nice, and so is the Stradic, but for my money I have found that any Team Diawa reel, be it the older Gold Tournament series, (also one of my fav's) or the newer Advantages, Sol's, Steez, they are all top notch. Smoothest drag you will find, and a bail that also performs flawlessly in all weather. I also own two Pfluger Presidents and I really like the reels, just haven't fished them enough to say that they'll stand up to a good amount of abuse.

shimano, by far the best i own saharas spirex and 1 sustain curado and chronarch. 2 pflugers i have owned are not that good in my opinion. one trip to ocean isle and my pfluger was toast. the other (supreme) a gromet holding the drag spring had to be jerry rigged on wilhelm. i'll never buy another one. I do own 1 okuma and have had 0 problems with it. just my experience.

I got a Pflueger President at the beginning of this year's season, and after years of scrubbing it with cheap gear, I almost giggle every time I use this nice steelie reel. I know it's not super super high end, but it is for me, and so far I can fully recommend it as someone that has caught many chromers on cheaper gear, and a couple dozen this year. Now hopefully it holds up over the seasons to come!

I have it screwed down on a 8'6" ugly stick Lite. Again, not a nice rod by many people's standards, but I'm super happy with it.

    Good luck!

Glad you found a reel.  Sounds like you made a good choice.  Now it is time to break it in on some steelies.  Good luck.

lol, i just started fly fishing and i thought $350 for a combo was pretty expensive

    ORIGINAL: anadromous

Coming in at $775.00 it seems like a value for the beginning fly-fisherman...You may even consider getting 2 or 3 back up spools at only $340.00 a piece. Once you get onto the sport then you can step up and buy a quality reel and rod...

If you are thinking about starting to fly fish and you are not really sure if you are going to like it, you can get a reasonable combo for around $100 to $200.  Better yet, if you have a friend who has a fly rod ask them to use it and see how you like it.  There is no reason to run out and lay down a ton of money on a fly rod and reel, line, backing, leaders, tippet, flies, etc... and find out it is not really your cup of tea.  Also, if you don't fish that much you will end up with an expensive set up that will sit in the closet collecting dust.

Having said that, I honestly love to fly fish for steelies as well as use my noodle rod and centerpin.  It is fun to switch up gear and fish with different set ups, bait, flies, jigs, etc...  Also, for some conditions the fly rod is better and others the noodle rod is a better choice.

Good luck with whatever gear you decide to use.

I was in Gander Mt. today and the Guy working there told me that Pflueger  makes the Gander guide series reels. Anyone know if that is truth? They are all 25% off now and they are about 10-15 bucks cheaper to start with. The specs on the reels were identical but sometimes they make them with inferior components. He insisted that they were identical just different names.
