will it live?

Was talking to a guy last night that said he was able to keep 2 steelhead alive with a small air pump in a large container to let loose in his creek by his house.I think he is full of poop.I tend to guess if they did live for him to release they would just die anyways. It can't be safe for releasing fish from erie to creeks around here.Different bacterias and other things the fish could carry to infect the fish around here.I still don't think its possible.Any thoughts?

I think it is definitely illegal as all hell.  Besides, whats the whole point of it?  Even is the fish do survive, they won't last through spring or summer.

My point exactly. He thinks with the bait fish and plenty of the other sources of food, and no pressure it would survive just fine. They have to reproduce.

Out of curiosity....Anyone know the actual law on releasing fish into another area? I live near a small trib in Erie. It runs right behind my house, but the fish can't make it up that far. I have had JOKING conversations with friends that we should release our catch into the hole behind our house. The fish could get back down...just not up......Thanx

I don't always snag fish, but when I do...
    I choose Little Cleos

It reads as though you CAN legally do this.....

*To release any species of fish, except those listed as approved by the Fish & Boat Commission, in Commonwealth waters without written permission from the executive director of the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

Actually Trout, they have take it further than that. It illegal to transport ANY live fish fro the Erie watershed to inland waters. As well as eggs.

    Slick,

This WOULD be legal. Technically though, by transporting them up stream you will have taken "posession of them. Thus you would only be able to "legally" move 3 fish per day.

other than the fact that it's illegal, that has been abundantly pointed out

IF..the water was cold enough thru the summer, there's no reason they wouldn't survive.
be the same as big rainbow, no?

    am i missing something?

i caught a steelie on a deep hole in Connie June 3rd one year.
I've heard (from a reliable source) of one being caught in  an even  deeper hole in mid July

These spots are well  upstream too

Getting back to the steelhead question.   IF the person in question has the means to keep steelhead alive, and there is abundant food for them why not just catch a couple of regular rainbow trout and feed them excessively.
Years ago we did just that on a small creek by my parents house.  I caught some 8" bows and we placed them in the small creek.  and we fed them almost every day.  Within two years from the time I caught them they were in the 18" range.   Then some mental giant ignored the "No fishing" signs and caught all ten of the fish.  that ended the experiment rather quickly.   I just wanted to see how big they would get.  I'm thinking 30" (+) in about three or four years.

It would also be possible to get them certified as VHS free, just as they do for emerald shiners & king eggs.

Ever been hunting in the woods and see a tree stand? Tells me it's a good area to hunt. Now if you had put up a sign that said private property the fish might still be there. My 2cents for the year.

It would be a real tragidey if that fellow put them fish in his creek to find out they had VHS and killed off a whole species of fish. Stupid is & stupid was!

not a rip, but am I missing something here? I thought Steelies were a hybrid in such they don't reproduce, hence the enormous stocking, if I'm incorrect can someone clue me in.

My point exactly. He thinks with the bait fish and plenty of the other sources of food, and no pressure it would survive just fine. They have to reproduce.

No Steelhead are not hybrids.   There ability to reproduce in PA has everything to do with the water/stream, nothing to do with the fish.
