Stocking Brown Trout
Recently came across a discarded brown trout on the side of one of the Tribs. The brown appeared to have been “placed†by the streamside in a small depression as if someone wanted it discovered to start a rumor mill. I can just picture the individual after a long night of elbow bending and pork rinds coming up with the idea of “stocking†a rotting brown. As they leave their vehicle and walk up the Tribs with the brown safely tucked away - the idea begins to fester in their gut until they find the perfect location, not too secluded. They dump their prey; stalk away not wanting to be seen, and awaiting its discovery. A least this is what I had pictured. So the question is are brown trout stocked in the Tribs? If so then by whom?
...just watch for the twitch and then bring on the thunder!

There are some browns stocked. I believe the Fish Commission puts a few in but the bulk are clubs. Someone more knowledgeable could chime in here with more accurate information. One other thing that may happen, and I stress may, is a few of the stockies in Elk make it to the lake and come back. As for catching a brown, it seems kinda rare, but I did manage one last year and I know of others being caught.

Bug is right, most of the ones now come from the state's stocking of Elk & 20mile creeks from the regular spring pellethead season. Some make it out to the lake and return with the steelheads. Some are strays from NY or the other great lakes. The PFBC just started stocking brown trout smolts this year I beleive. We hopefully will see some ruturns in a few years. This should add to a mix bag of steelies, browns and the ever so rare stray salmon. This from an PFBC Biologist from 2002 Regarding your second question; 3-C-U stocks about 40,000 brown trout in Trout Run each year. The PFBC also stocks brown trout in numerous Erie tributaries ( 20 mile Creek, Crooked Creek, Elk Creek and Cascade Creek) for the spring " trout opener". The trophy browns that you are seeing are most likely the product of these efforts.

NY stocks brown trout smolt in 20 mile, in the NY part. Most are just pellet heads probably though. Hope that the PFBC keeps stocking BT smolt.

I beleive many of our browns are strays from the NY stockings of Lake Erie. Several thousand are stocked annually, although some years there seems to be more than others. 2 years that stick out were 2003 and 2005, both had nice runs of browns in 20 Mile, and the NY LE tribs. One particular day on 20 Mile in 2005, I fished over 2 seperate pods of browns with at least 8-10 fish in each, and all nice sized. One of my most memorable days on the LE tribs ever.

On 12/12/08, I caught a nice brown trout on Elk Creek. It's the first one I've caught there. It went about 22 inches long.

Here's the same photo but in GIF. I'm not sure if the previous photo in JPEG came up or not.

I have stocked a few browns on the west side. They were 14-18" though.
