My fly selection is dependent on water conditions more than season....I like egg patters for steel in every season..

I fished 20 mile Thanksgiving day and I caught fish on orange glo bugs, skein buggers, spey flies, and dark woolly buggers.  Basically, I had great luck on a number of flies. The conditions were perfect that day and the fish were hitting a wide variety of flies.  If the conditions are not  so perfect, I agree with tippy.  If the water is high and off color try larger, dark flies.  If the water is falling and clearing, try larger, brighter color flies, particular minnow patterns.  When the water clears, try smaller more subdued egg patterns and nymph patterns.

Personally, I hit the streams with a variety of egg patterns - glo bugs and sucker spawn, small dark nymphs - pheasant tails and copper johns, woolly buggers - black, olive and brown and streamers.  I also keep a few soft hackles and spey flies in my box.  When the water goes down, I start with a sucker spawn or glo bug with a nymph dropper.  If the water is high and flowing, I usually start with a streamer or spey fly.

There is no perfect fly that always catches fish.  You need to try a variety of flies and see what the fish are interested in.

Wooly buggers, nymphs and egg patterns are pretty much year round favorites for me ...just a matter of changing up sizes/ colors till you find what the fish want on a given day

Don't over look the bright blues.  I started using blue flies, especially streamers and buggers a few years ago and was surprised at how well they work.  One favorite is a simple variation on the wooly bugger.

Another good option are woolly worms.  You tie them just like a bugger, but instead of the marabou tail, tie in a small amout of glo bug yarn or wool.  The idea is to form a small, roundish tail.  Use a bright color like red, orange, lime green, blue with a dark body and hackled fly.  These have worked when nothing else was.

I usally start with "black bead head stone fly" and Mysis shrimp".
