ya id say... that fish is massive, and the sad thing is it might not of been the biggest in CA... the arcticle says that the alaskan record is 97 lbs... i couldnt imagine catching a salmon that big.

For the supreme test of a fisherman is not how many fish he has caught, not even how he has caught them, but what he has caught when he has caught no fish."

Has anybody fished out west or in Ak for the BIG kings ? I got a 25lber out of NY, which is common, but never dreamed of one like that beast, would love to hear the stories if you got a massive one.

I lived in Alaska for four years (91-95) and was back up last summer for acouple weeks, this is truely a big king.  How it ended up in California and not the Kenai river is beyond me. The biggest king that I have caught was 42Lbs.   I can't imagine this fish weighing as much as they say it does but it is a big fish.  You guys think these steelies are fun, hook into a big ole king in a creek like Elk and hold on.   God Bless..

"...hook into a big ole king in a creek like Elk and hold on.", you mean when they are way upstream, and all red, ready to spawn? Yea, thats deffinitely not a good time to be targeting Kings?

Your right it isn't, there is nothing like catching them fresh out of the salt when they still have sea lice on them and as chrome as a bumber on a 55 chevy.   They are so much better to eat then also.  Pacific salmon unlike the steelies of Erie die after they spawn.  It is a slow drawn out process of literally rottingto death.  But oh I can't wait to head back north to see Sarah and hook into a monster.   Heck I'd even settle for a 6 or 7 lb humpy.

Thats part of what I was getting at KingBuster, but targeting spawning fish way upriver is seriously detrimental to their spawning success rate.

For starters where did I say anything about fishing for spawning fish?  All I said was imagine what it would be like to hook into a big ole King in a creek like Elk referring to the size of alot of the streams you fish in ALaska.  Where do you think they fish for King's in Alaska or even New York?  It is not in the salt, it is in the tribs, just as we do in Erie.  You are  right though we shouldn't be targeting fish that are spawning.  Believe it or not there are several runs of Kings and silvers in Alaska that are maintained by stocked fingerlings just to keep them in existance.  We all need to take this into consideration with the steelhead of Erie. Yes it is nice to catch fish, but it is even nicer to have fish to try and catch.  Just talk to the folks on the west coast.  I have lived there also. It is ashame that those runs have been lost.
