Tandem fishing!

i am new to fly fishing for steelhead, and was wondering how i should tie a tandem set up. i usually tie the fly directly to the hook of the top fly, but i had trouble a week or so ago with fish hitting the bottom fly and either bending the top flies hook and busting off or just snapping the hook or line. any suggestions.

Dude, you were fine asking your question just as you did.  This stuff comes up again and again, year after year....it really never gets old to me and you never know when someone might have something new to add or a new method.  Besides, if everything was directed toward a previous post or pre-set link, what would the purpose of this message board be?  Because just about EVERYTHING has been covered over the years.

When trout fishing I tye the tagg end of the tippet a little long off the blood knot. About 4". I put my dropper fly there.
When steelhead fishing I use only one fly. I dont need the hassle of a 2 fly rig if I hook a 13 pounder.

No... you still lose both flys when you snag the bottom

Not all the time.   I do hate when you hook a fish on the dropper only to have the top fly pierce the fish somewhere during it's fight.  Makes for a foul hooked fish.  At least it looks like one.  I've also had fish take the top fly, throw it, then get foul hooked by the dropper.  Hate that as well.
