First Time

Went up yesterday for my first steelhead trip ever.  I had a blast.  Hooked into 6 and landed one.  Have to say the crowds weren't what I expected.  Plenty of room and fish for everyone.  Don't know if you read this board but thanks to Roy and his buddies for the laughs and tips!  Hope the cell phone dries out!  I have to day that it was the first time I have ever fished with fluorocarbon but I am not impressed.  I think I would have landed more fish with sewing thread.  I was using 8 pound Vanish (all I could get a hold of) and it snapped every time.  When it didn't snap it would look like someone took a cheese grater to it after a few casts.  Unless there is something more abrasion resistant I would rather fish with mono.  Thanks again for everyone's help in getting me hooked on this thing called steelheadin'.

I'm surprised you had problems with your line, especially since you were using 8#.  I use 4# vanish and really like it.  Most people on this board hate it so I'm sure you will get some help on what line to use.  My buddy uses seager and loves it, maybe give that a try.

At least you had a blast.  It looks now like you will be a lifer.

You may have bought an old spool or something?

But Seaguar is my favorite with fluoro...

Glad you had a good time, though!

I use Vanish 2# for fish around here and I've had betterabrasion resistance with it than with 4# mono.  Just my 2 cents.

Glad to hear you had a good time though!

Pitt, good to hear you hooked up.

As far as the flouro, what type of knot were you tying? try a palomer knot. might help. good luck.....

I would definitly recommend Seagur Grand Max 4X Flurocarbon. Especially if the streams are running on the gin clear side. I use
6lb McCoy Mean Green with a three to four foot leader of the 4X Seagur fluro stuff. Never had any snap offs or other tangling problems. What kind of not were you using? I honestly love the Palomer knot. NEver had a big problem with them except trying to tie them. Sometimes they give me a hard time when trying to get them just right. But when I do get them tied they work great! Congrats on your first steelheading trip! It took me a year before landing my first steelhead!

Glad to hear we have a new lifer. but anyways i use segar grand max fluro now that my buddy showed me, its 9.2#, and its the same diameter is 4#. i have had no complaints, but regardless after a fish i retie my line anyways just incase the fish of a lifetime comes around. and as for vanish i had it shred on me a couple weeks ago before i switched to segar grand max, the line kept shredding when i hooked a fish. it looked like the end of some string when you cut it and then make the end lose. i am not sure why but i quit using it... hope that helps

I used the Segaur until I found it has a short shelf life. Now I use either Frogshair or Pline,so far no problems with either. The Pline #6 held up to Salmon on the SR in NY,tough stuff!

Glad you had a good time. I,m sure you are hooked now!
I use vanish but have 8lb that is not as strong as my 6lb. Could just be old stuff.
