What is the best time for Steelhead fishing?
What is your opinion is on this?
I think late November (after Thanksgiving) thru early March is the best time... as long as the temperature is above freezing, and there are no leaves to contend with.
By best, I mean hooking lots, many fights, landing and releasing them on just about any fly for the variable water conditions.

I like those times too. Not so nutz about Spring in Pa, though. Fish are mostly Fall/Winter hold overs that have been beat to death, (save for the handful of fresh Ohio strays and Pa jacks that show up) ORIGINAL: Hefalump By best, I mean hooking lots, many fights, landing and releasing them on just about any fly for the variable water conditions.

That one I'm just not sure of. I probably like Nov the best, just cause that's when the season is generally at peak numbers in Pa Obviously if there's more fish around, the odds are better of finding more dumb ones (the only kind I'm good at catching) BUT...I fish from Sept to May and honestly don't know that I notice any pattern of better bites in one month to another. Unless you happen upon a pod of very fresh, (which usually means dumb) fish It's more a daily thing, (or even an hourly thing) that I've noticed most. We've all seen it where most everyone is catching, then like a light bulb, they turn off, or visa versa. There's also an abundance of truth to the old saying, "you shoulda been here yesterday" ...L.T.A.

I'd say between 12:01 AM and Midnight usually work out best for me. But I have been known to fish between midnight and 12:01AM also. It depends on the depth of the snow and the color of the fur on the wooly bear caterpillars. Anytime after the 1st day of deer season on a weekend when the nitnany lions and the steelers are both playing on TV, and the bars are open.

After a good rain in late fall. A good run of fish will come in and the old muddler minnow will catch you plenty. You can fish below and above the holes in the faster water. You will be away from the crowds and where the fish are feeding readily.

When it's cold and miserable. Lot less guys and still plenty of fish to catch. I can usually only go on the weekends so I always have to fight the crowds, but when its nasty out you can get some nice parts of the creek to yourself and put on a clinic. Even though no one sees you. Unless a couple buddies are with you.

From Oct 1st to March 30th, each morning from day break until about 9:30 a.m. when the the switch gets turned off. Then turned back on just before dark.
