SMOLTS

Has anyone noticed a lot of smolts in the steam? I thought they were stocked in the early spring. If these were stocked can anyone tell me why this time of year. I would think that there would be a high mortality rate this time of the year.

I caught two on 7 mile a week ago. I do not have a clue why they where still in there if they where stocked in the spring.

I'm always surprised when I catch a few smolts in the fall.

Don't why I'm still surprised by it, cause it's not uncommon in some spots

I've seen several dinks this year and  in past seasons that are too small to be lake run 1st year jacks, and too big to be considered smolts anymore.

makes me wonder if they're just smolts that stayed the summer and ate well, or a pellet head stockie that made it through the summer

I caught a dozen in the 3" range on an east side creek, not 7 mile.
I don't think they were stocked, because I'm pretty sure they aren't stocked that small. I had to quit using single eggs, because they woukld either strip it off or hook themselves. I also caught 3 in another east side creek about the same size, and on big black buggers.  I've caught 2 or 3 previously in the fall, but never this many.

I caught two on lower Elk two weeks ago. They hit a small nymph very hard. They were only about 5 inches long.

Maybe it was natural. Who knows, stranger things have happened!

Kinda cool to think they're naturally reproducing.

i think private clubs/ PFBC are much more likely than natural repro

KJH, I would have to disagree....these fish are not sterile and there are some sutable spawnig areas in almost all the tribs. I'm sure some natural repro happens.

Well, I could be wrong, but I've never seen smolts that small.
One was even under 3".  I think they have to be wild.

I agree it's "more likely"  but it happens, KJ
We seined some steelie fry  out of a deep hole one summer years ago.
    All documented, legit stuff

Haven't a clue what the natural repro stats are, but I'm sure there's "some" N-R going on.
Maybe 1-2% on some creeks, maybe as much 10% + on others.

There's a fair amount of "no trespass" water on the creeks.
While the creek habitat isn't idea for NR, it's suitable in some spots
