rsquared... thats a lot of info

Nymphs definately fish better in fast water
Are there even stone flys in the stream? Not every stream has them.

The delayed harvest fish are most likely gonna want to see somthing more of a direct iimitation. Instead of a hares ear(I dont do well on this fly), a pheasant tail would most likely be a better option if you cant match the naturals.

Wets... you gotta match the hatch on tough fish, if you see blue winged olives, get a wet with an olive body and dun colored wings. Tying your own, really helps here cause you can get the exact color combo you want. Best generic wet by far is the leadwing coachman.

Hatches vary by streams, the best information I can give you is learn the characteristics of most species and when they hatch. I recommend you buy this book and keep it with you for awhile. It shows all the hatches in the north east, you can catch a fly or nymph and look for it in the book. It has the nymph stage as well as the adult stage of every mayfly you will ever see.

I've been reading along here with interest, since I just picked up a fly rod for the first time early last summer.  Been doing OK now and then on a delayed harvest section in southwest PA the past few weeks with single egg patterns and sucker spawn, but have yet to hook up on any of the nymphs I bought from the local fly shop: hare's ear, bead head, and black stonefly.

I've been fishing the nymphs mainly under an indicator in the slower, deeper pools with no results.  Switch to the egg or spawn, and my luck changes.  Couple of questions come to mind.
Should I be fishing nymphs without an indicator?  Are nymphs more productive in faster water?
Is there kind of conditioning period that pelletheads undergo when they begin to prefer nymphs and more natural flies over the eggs and spawn patterns?
When you guys talk about wet flies, which patterns should I look into getting?
When do hatches start showing up and what dry flies should I be looking to use then?

which streams are you fishing?

As thedrake said. I,ve been fishing below a dam localy and doing real well with beadhead pheasant tails and caddis, 12-14. Watch your indicater for any movement, pauses or downright disapearing under. Can,t go wrong, add weight to the stream flow. You,ll have a blast!

jlh & others -

thanks for the info.  i talked to a guy the other day on this stream who has fished it for a number of years.  he told me that later in the spring there are lots of stonefly nymphs in the stream and that he kills 'em on that pattern.  since i'm new to all of this, i was a little surprised since i thought stoneflies were only late winter/early spring hatches.  in fact, i was beginning to wonder if i should stop fishing the stonefly nymph.  guess i'll keep trying.

i'm fishing the bull creek delayed harvest area in northern allegheny county and would like to make a few trips soon to the buffalo creek delayed harvest area in armstrong.

I've fished the Yough a few times.  I didn't go to the spillway but i crossed the bike path and went into the river.  I had the most luck on Grey and Brown Hackles.  They are fairly simple patterns but catch a lot of fish.  Another choice is a fly called the Grannom.  I fished with a 3 tipped leader with those 3 flies and had plenty of luck.

Good thread....I used my flyrod last opening day, I changed flies often, and the only thing I had luck on was a white wooly bugger with a small splitshot about a foot in front of it. Either dead drifted ,on a strike indicator, or roll casted and stripped in. Most of the fish were brown trout.

Pulled out an old fly box and found some flies I used when I lived in Colorado. Some of these flies are tied on 18 - 22 hooks. I can't even see the eye any more to tie them on..Any one use anything that small around here..We had to use flies that small there, clear water and very spooky fish. You wouldn't think you could hook 10lb brown trout on a 22 hook.

heck yea bings use 22's for the native brook trout streams in western pa. some midge's can be tyed on something as small as a 28. So my suggestion is keep the flys and get some clip on the hat magnifiers so you can see to tie on and good luck

95% of all the flies I carry are 18 and smaller. I fish 22's almost every time out. Trico hatch...26-28's

You could always just tie 32's, they dont have an eye, tie them right into the leaders.

While I like to fish sub-surface as much as I like a sharp stick in the eye, for 1st day pelletheads, that is the only way to go.  I agree with the wet fly thing, but if you would rather fish nymphs, I suggest that you only need to tie two.

Nymph 1 -- spin a ball of dark olive deer hair on a # 12 hook.  Clip the bottom flat.  This is called the Trout Chow fly.

Nymph 2 -- do the same thing with yellow deer hair.  This is called the Corn fly.

Put enough weight about 6 inches up the line to have the shot ticking bottom and go to town.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion

Kyler,
It wasnt too long ago when I first started fly fishing, let me tell you a few things that i have learned. For early season fishing like this I would stick to nymph fishing, try this with a float but make sure the fly you are using is close to the bottom. Also one of my all time favorite flies are wolly buggers, these will work well this time of year Brown Black Green White and olive. As for dry flies I would not be too concered with them right now, I usually dont use them till mid may. But a god dry fly to have in your box is an parachute adams this fly works well. Hope this helps.

The ticket yesterday was

#1 - Yellow/Chartruse Sucker Spawn
#2 - Hares Ear Nymphs
#3 - Royal Coachmans

I tested the water temp at 8am, it was 40, I struggled for awhile to catch fish. As it got warmer, they turned on and I pounded the snot out of them. Not nearly as good as other years due to the cold, but still good.

only color I used was pink didnt get any strikes... then i was going to use chartruse sucker spawn and a guy across the stream asked if there was a palimino in the hole i was fishing an i said yea...well he threw first cast wth green salmon egg and bam... i was kinda ****ed lol so i went to the truck and joked with all the other guys an we ended up heading to dew drop inn and then the rains came. once the streams drop some this week ill be back out and using them for sure.
