Help for a Newbie from Cincy

Guys,

Newbie to this site-- Looks Awesome! I am coming up from Cincinnati to take my Dad fishing SUnday & Monday. We have a 16 ft Lund with 30 hp. We want to steelhead fish and perch fish. We need guidance-- My Dad lives in Espyville so we will be driving up both days. Any suggestions on what to do, where to go-- Do we have to go in stream to catch steelies, can we fish the mouths out of the boat and have an equal chance for success-- I think I am prepared, I went to Bass Pro yesterday and bought a bunch of lil cleos and small bobbers for live bait--

What about perch, can we steelies in the Am and then hit the lake if it is laid down and chase perch? Which trib is the most accessible-- Any guidance is appreciated-- Tight Lines to all and You guys Rock! Mo

If the waves permit, troll out a ways in front of the creek mouths for steelies. Or you can anchor and cast spoons. Just astay out far enough as not to interfer with the shore fisherman that are wading. Good Luck

If you have never been on the big water.  Be very careful, and have all your safety gear on board.  A 16" boat can be a little small for the lake this time of year.  If you see weather coming up - -  HEAD for the dock.  L. Erie can change moods in a minute.

    I agree
When I'm boating on the Erie "tribs" at this time of year, I want nothing smaller than a 24ft  cuddy

Sorry, Indi, I knew what you meant, but i just couldn't resit....

    Welcome Big mo.
Sorry i can't help, I'm "buoyancy challenged" (no boat)
Just can't help being an [sm=****.gif] at times....

    Genie,
I just now re-read the post and I really laughed.  You could almost run your cuddy on Elk right now.  I'll fix it right away boss!

ROUGH, ROUGH, ROUGH. LOOK AT THE WEATHER AND WAVES PART OF THE REPORTS PAGE. IT WILL GIVE YOU A IDEA ABOUT THE WIND SPEEDS AND DIRECTION. THE LAKE CAN TURN REAL UGLY REAL FAST. IF YOU CAN'T GET ON THE LAKE TRY HITTING THE STREAMS. THEY HAVE BEEN UP FOR A COUPLE DAYS NOW SO I'M SURE THE STEELIES HAVE MADE IT UP PAST RT20 BY NOW.

Welcome - I fish with a 16 footer - been out in 5's & 6's + (nice day) - took it slow. Important to know limitations of your equipment and as stated have all your safety equipment.

Perch are still available. Crappie rigs & minnows (alive, dead, salted) work well and sometimes a small piece of a nightcrawler!

Another alternative is Preque Isle Bay -search erie maps, etc. this site - if the lake is too rough or streams blown out - you'll have a variety to catch from steelhead to perch, bass, pike, crappie, etc.

    Good Luck!
