Weird trend to start of season

Went up today, 3rd Saturday in a row. 7 fish 2 weeks ago, 1 fish last week, 8 today. All males. Not one single female. I notice certain times in the fall when you catch in one day a majority of one or the other, but in 8 years I have seen it the other way around at the beginning, mostly females. Think its just coincidence? Any theories.

Either way some real battles today, found plenty of fish where it wasn't elbow to elbow and not upstream either. Flatfish were getting killed today. Even landed 3 on a 2.25 inch model. It was deep in the throats of 2 of them, roped them up. Amazing day to be outdoors regardless of fish count.

    Joe,
Odd that you should mention that.   Last year I saw a large predominance of females.  Were the males good sized or were they jacks.  If they were goodly sized they could be holdovers from 3-4 years just now making it in for the first time.  Any way good show and tight lines.

Only the best lure to use on fresh running steelhead in low almost stagnant clear water...I keep no secrets except for color. As far as the fish all have been your typical 4-9 lbers. As far as the fishing today, in the right areas there was an amazing wind ripple on the water that kept many fish active throughout the day. They chase hard in those conditions, hot weather and no water be ****ed.

    Interesting observation, Joe

i haven't really noticed catching  more of one than the other.

i have noticed none of the hens I've landed were typical size (4 to 6 pound)
i landed a she-pig Friday and the several I've lost (that I'm "pretty sure" were hens)  were close to being porkers too

Do you have a favorite color/ pattern of flatfish? I've used them for smallies and walleye in rivers, but not steel yet.

I got some females on Saturday.  Just must be the luck of the draw for you this year Joe.  Be thankful to be catching some steel this early!  Awesome battles this time of year, thats for sure!  I got most action on Little Cleos and Gator spoons.  Tight lines.

Flatfish work great in the lake, put on a split shot 8-10 inches up, make sure you have a full spool of line. Casting is limited so I only toss em when fish are within reach. Don't be afraid to us 2.25 inch models in lake and near mouths, go to 1.75 in the creeks, and 1.5 further up. Many many colors work so well you'll buy 5 at a time. Buy a few bright, dark, whiter colors, glow in the dark, and see what works best. They will all get bit, some much more than others.

About 5 years ago @ a bait shop the guy mentioned all hens being caught the last couple of days. Did not get one hen that day. Dave
