Kings moving in!

King salmon are moving closer and closer towards the Salmon River. Lake Ontario charters have been producing decent catches on most trips. There's even a few salmon starting up the Salmon River each day. On the last few charters out on the lake we've been fishing 50-60' straight off the river mouth. Salmon have been biting glow spoons, J-plugs and spin dr/flies down 10-20' off the bottom.
Going slower was the the key today (8/1/08)-2.2-2.4 gps speed. A lot of BIG salmon have been taken lately, including a NEW world record coho caught on a charter boat out of the Little Salmon River - a whopping 34 pounds!!! We've had plenty of good kings in the mid 20s to low 30 pound range.

Drift boat guiding/chartering the Salmon River/Lake Ontario and since 1990.

Very cool. Won't be long until you'll be wearing out those old arms again.

Quite a few people have told me that the run was going to be late this year. I don't see how when the water levels have been perfect and temps average. I know the one place that I called about reservations said that the big run won't start till november. Maybe because he had rooms available for that time. I cant wait. I have one more month and all I can think about is salmon. They should be in good numbers very soon.

Gottum: thanks for the lake report. Glad to hear they're getting fish.

The fishing in the eastern basin of LO wasn't as good as it has been compared to the past 5-7 years. As someone else noted, the Salmon fishing this year is about the average timetable from years ago. With the fish showing up later this year, many thought they would run later in the river. I thought it myself but it seems to be back on track now...

it's not that the #s haven't been here it's more that the weather/conditions made it tougher to figure them out- we took enough kings in June and July but they moved on us everytime the wind switched -which was quite often- so w/ all the foul weather the BTs were a great plan B- kinda like hitting the ''easy'' button-
Also alot of trolllers were put off by the price of fuel- That equals less intel on the salmon patterns. Again this makes the BTs the fall back choice seeing as they are usually alot closer to shore thus less fuel consumption.

looks like the coho record was broke again today in mexico bay- we'll see if it holds up

Broken again? Very good to hear. Thank you.
A chance at a Big fish is the reason I prefer your neck of the woods.

    Since you're here....
How much flow can you get out into that flatwater we fished at? Know what I mean? Safe wading cfs..
I think it was about 300 when you showed me.
Just wondering. I had a great time fishing there once I learned to see the fish.
    You still have those lures?
