I rarely fish below cedar creek.  There is fish there but the water is miserable, like you said.

I've fished that stretch two or three times. Caught over 20 each time, all decent size. I can't complain.

Smithton to Cedar Creek isn't very far, and the water is flat and unappealing... for my liking anyhow.

I need to start pulling my kayak off to shore when i come up to a nice set of riffles and fish right where the riffles end and the water is slowing down into a deeper pool.  these are probably the best areas to fish, but on a float, you go right through them, only gettin a cast or 2.

    Trans,

There is some great fishing holes below Cedar Creek, I know the prior smallie record came from down there. In fact I do believe the location was about 1/2 mile or so below the creek. Lot of eyes and sauger down that way as well and now if you want trout, you best bet is to troll the trough down through Sutersville. Mother-in-law's boyfriend (Billski) and his good fishing partner always being home a limit of trout from down there.

Since I am not a kayaker, not sure if you could drop an anchor, if you can, then you got it made.

Yea, we yakked that same stretch a few weeks back.  Not too much luck.  The mud bottom makes the smallie fishing pretty tough.  Only highlight was seeing a monster (35"-40") muskie from the yak right near Cedar Creek boat launch.  Pretty intense.  I'm going to try the next stretch up next time I do it.  Maybe put in around Layton?

You seem to target mr. mirroeyes a good bit.  Do you usually drift fish for them, or anchor in a spot that you know holds them?

    Thanks,
    PT

    PT,

Used to out of a canoe, but got rid of it about 10 years ago. Fish the Yough wading and walking somewhere in the river, I pretty much know where to find them when they aren't moving. A good example was the last night and tonight, Last night caught 8 nice eyez, fished the same area tonight and caught none. They are on the move. When I had the canoe, I would drift and then troll back up river, had an electric motor for the canoe. I have been using crawlers for them, but I am having good success using Walking Worms in the pumpkinseed color. Hope this helps you PT.

I fished that stretch above Cedar Creek Park last year with a buddy of mine.  We caught a good bit, but mostly small bass.  You would be better off just wading at Whitsett or Vanmeter behind the ball fields.  The hazelbakers stretch has been the most productive for me.

If you can drag your canoe about 100 yards you should park on the trail side of the bridge.

Thanks for the advice GTO.  A buddy of mine, has an uncle with some property on the river.  He wants to get a walleye outing together soon.  If the smallmouth are still hot by then, I'm not sure if I can resist the action and try focus on the eyes!  I'll be sure to grab some crawlers and leeches though.

My buddys and I have fished the Yough all summer, we"ve caught over 200 smallys. Sunday afternoon my buddy caught a 21 incher about 6 lbs. Its not uncommon for us to catch over 75 smallys in an afternoon.  What a great river!!!!

Have'nt fished the yough in years, you guys are killin me (lol) It is indeed a nice natural treasure, thats for sure. When i did fish it, i always fished the West Newton/Sutersville area, and occasionally, cedar creek park area as well.
