Recent SR report

Fished the SR the week of 8/19. Water levels fluctuated from 500 to 1500+ including run-off. Water stained pretty dark, had to cover lot's of water for any hook-ups. Gorgeous weather for this time of the year, actually felt like late Sept, with lows in the 40's and highs in the 70's. Hooked up with one hot bright king for 5-6 minutes and a few runs into the backing before it headed back to the lake. Other days averaged 1-2 hook-ups, all with skams and 1 nice Atlantic on a Bomber.

I think some reports went out about fish in the River, and of course many are still in from the summer run, but believe me, plan on casting and covering lot's of water to have any hook-ups. Yet, it's a great place to be in August if your looking for solitude and some beautiful water all to yourself.

Tight lines,

thanks for the report salt. I have never got tangle with an Atlantic. That would make the whole trip worth while for me. I'm gonna head up second or third week of September. Crossing my fingers for a good run.

    PA,

The last 2-3 years there have been strong Coho runs the first week of Sept., and the second week of Sept. Just target them with colorful streamer's on the swing and you'll hook-up. As far as Atlantic Salmon, yea it's all worth it hooking up with 1 of those beautiful fish, but be patient. In 18 years of fishing the SR, I've only landed three large Atlantic's.

    Old Salt,
Happen to have any pictures of the Atlantics?  I'd love to see a Salmon River Atlantic and since I only make it up about once a year my best bet seems to be a picture of one someone else caught.  Also, the Atlantics, when you find one, are they more aggressive on the strike?

    flathead,

I've never actually found an Atlantic in the SR holding in one spot and fished to it. All my hook-ups with Atlantic's have come from blind casting with little or no weight. Yes, they make up their minds pretty quick when they take, not like a slow drift or bouncing the bottom for Kings or Steelies. Usually within seconds after the fly hits the water, or if your swinging, they hit exactly on the swing when your line starts to straighten out and hopefully all your slack is out. The takes are aggressive, similar to a hot steelie, but Atlantic's always jump. Then there is the exception to every rule, as some of the one's I lost, have hit while I had too much slack in the line, especially when working a bomber.

Sorry, no pics. I carry a camera all the time now, so I probably won't land any more !

    PA,

Some years they stay in the estuary for a long time. With the great flows so far this year, I'd assume that by now a dozen or two or so are moving into the river every night. Keep an eye on Sept. 1st thru the 4th. New moon those days, always a great trigger for fish to go on the feed or go on the move.

    Old Salt,
Thanks for the reply.  A few years ago I had a hit the first cast of the morning and the fish immediatly jumped then on the second cast it threw my fly (caught me off guard).  I always wondered about that one.  It wasn't a chinook or coho.  I figured it was a steelhead but always wondered if it was an atlantic (didn't get a good enough look at it).

It's too early for any big numbers of fish,it should be much better in two weeks.

water levels begining tonight will drop to just over 300cfs, from 750 +.  I'd fish the DSR for another week if you go now.  Not many fish in yet.
