When you were a kid the whole objective was to throw the bread so the birds walked on the fish to get the bread. Unless they plan on selling large pellets that float and birds are interested in eating the whole experience is going to change. Who wants to throw a handfull of tiny pellets you just had to buy out of a machine and watch them sink?? Might as well just throw your quarter into the lake. Oh yeah, that would littering so don't do that. People will stop going and once again the local economy will suffer. What a shame. Someone remind me why as taxpayers we just paid to have the entire area remodeled.

just make the littering a offence..

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!! the fish cops have no reason to chase 20hp motor offenders any longer. the walleye mayhem at the spillway doesnt start for awhile. get them out of the Countryside Restaurant, L'il Bit, Spillway Inn, etc... and have them hand out littering fines.

I guess that's where they go when there is not a donut shop around!  At least now I know where to go when I have a question to ask them.

I didn't notice this mentioned as a possibility, but may have missed it as towards the end I skim read. I had heard no more bread had something to do with it causing an upset of nitrites in the water, adding too many. It's just what I heard. I don't know.

Just checked the online sharon herald and it said they are having a meeting about feeding the fish bread. It's on Sept. 8th at 6:30 to 8:30 at North Shenango Area Community Center, 2857 State Route 285, Espyville. Couple state reps are going to be there to hear the gripes. For more info call 724 588 8911. I'll post the article if i can copy it.

Didn't see pellet machines but they do sell the pellets at the consession stand.  The bread house definitely seems to be selling out quicker though.  Get there early!!

Guys , chill out......The bread issue is the result of several studies by Dr. Andy Turner of Clarion university.  He and his group of grad students (i.e. slaves) found that the bread at the spillway added 10x more phosphates than would normally be put in the lake.  Phosphates are major contributors to unchecked weed growth.  Pellets will cut down significantly on this unnessecary input and still allow people to feed.  The same places will be able to sell pellets that sold bread.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Dealin':  The creek you speak of and the Pymatuning watershed are totally different animals.  Just look at the pure volume of H2O.  Waste from that hatchery in one shot would blow a lot of smaller ecosystems, more fish waste from the hatchery than probably the entire biomass of that stream and as we all know, trout are much more particular about water quality than most species.  The article I read in the Meadville Tribune said that the fish comission now realizes the impact of the bread on the watershed and wished that it had never started, however, to rule it out entirely would ruin the tourist attraction that the spillway is.  I don't know the science behind it, but I am sure some fisheries biologist determined that the pellets are lower impact than the bread.

good info storm, a little follow up.....

the effluent (outflow) from that hatchery was found to be the equivelant of a city of 30,000 people flushing thier sewage directly into the lake.  Basically a 30,000 people taking a dump and a leak in the lake every day.  No other facility in PA would be able to operate something like this without some sort of treatment system.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

Do they have any low phosphate bread?  I think the mystique of that place, are the ducks and fish.  Will the ducks eat the pellets?

I am pretty sure they will.  they will become conditioned to eat whatever is being tossed.

one possibility to the carp-bread problem maybe to do away with the fish feeding altogether and open the whole area to fishing.  the walls and walkways would be a real nice area for families and young kids to fish, the concession could be used as a bait shop.  just an idea, of course.
