Gar Flies

Being from the allegheny water shed and seeing its amazing recovery before our eyes every day we fish, naturally some of us might be interested in fishing for and hopefully "hooking" a gar without doing any damage.  Is tying a "fly" without a hook still fly tying?

LOL! I remember reading comments from a guy who went beyond barbless to hookless in his flies -- i.e., he cut the hook at mid-bend. His idea was that if you got Mr. Trout to strike at your offering, you had fooled him, and that was sufficient. With Mr. Gar I have no experience.

In the past I have had good results using minnow patterns just below the surface at night. they are tuff to catch because of the teeth, alot of cut lines

Check out the story on the front page of www.fliesandfins.com.  The guy used a peice of rope combed strait.  I imagine he just broke the hook at the bend.  Appearently, the rope just gets tangled in thier teeth, kinda like velcro.  They are near impossible to hook conventionally since their jaws are so narrow.  It's really interesting.

I have caught a lot of gars and oniy one with a hook. It was a popper. Every other one was clamped on the feathers of a fly. Have even had the bite down on the leader. Seems that once the close the mouth they dont open it. You have pry it open when you land them.

I know that guys use the rope flies on Cayuga lake and are successful.

Not true. They may have a bunch of teeth, but they will not cut a line. The teeth are more like needles than anything. Never had a single one cut the line, or nicked it up for that matter.
Also the reason they are hard to hook is because of how hard the mouth is. Its like setting a hook into bone, so you need a unbelievably razor sharp hook.
