Chauncy???

Chauncy, are you going to be on Shenango Friday or Saturday?   We are leaning toward coming Friday if the weather allows.  It looks ok for now.  Admiral Jim and his son may be putting their new boat in the water as well.  It looks like the bite is still mixed shallow and deep.  I hope we see you in action.  I think I have a pack of deer cheese sticks left in the freezer so swing by for a snack if we run into you.  And, yes we have spoons in a variety of colors!!!!!

I've been going over to Mosquito lake this week and slammin the slabs. 2 trips....230 crappies and 2 walleyes. I'll probably be at shenango friday and saturday. I may be in my brothers Lowe on friday. My boat on saturday. Are you coming to the fish-together sunday?
Anyway, the crappies are shallow now at shenango. Fish any shallow wood you see. Spoon and nibble or small jig and nibble. Use the smallest bobber you can get by with. But you know that already. See you there.

Friday weather looks favorable.   Any rain should be gone.  I wish we could come Sunday, but that is Mother's Day so no fishing will be had that day.   We should see you somewhere on Friday.   More than likely Celery Bay area or possibly Parkers.

I'll come over to the celery bay area around 11. I want to fish the rocks in the launch bay first. Should be real close to shore by now in there. Big momma's gotta be moving in. Looking for that 17"er.

Actually, our first quick stops may be in the campground area too since we should be launching there and any weather worries should be minimal.  We're likely going to pick up a few minnows just to have the full smorgasboard handy.  I'll be rigging for jig/nibble & spoon/nibble.  See you in the AM following the drive up from down south.   I also found the deer sticks for a Celery Bay snack.

What type of spoon are you using(icelures). We use them often, tipped with maggots. Also are you using Berkley Crappie nibbles? We've tried them but haven't done much good  on them.We are catching some at Kahle on jigs.No jig seems better than the other.Caught them on tubes ,splittails ,twisters, grizzly jigs even fly and maggot.Nothing big though ,11 inches is tops for us.Would like to try Shenango some day.We live near Clarion and usually stay around here, fishing Kahle and some smaller ponds in the area. Thanks.

Rap, i've been slammin them drifting the 88 stumpfield. Lot of fish-ohio crappies in the last week. Biggest being 15". 6ft to 9ft water has been most productive. Don't throw out a marker or the NAVY will try to crowd you out.

We hit Shenango on Friday Chauncy.  The start was slow, but the finish was wild.   We took home 41 keepers, 1 catfish, 1 white bass.   Just as many throwbacks.  Mr. Irwin's daughter was up with her husband and ironically caught 41 keepers as well.   We caught 6 species---crappie, bluegill, perch, white bass, northern pike (23" on the 4-1/2 ultralight and 4# line), and a smallmouth bass.   As the Grand Puba of Shenango crappies, I'm sure you know where we caught the smallie!   Red and white tube jigs w/ nibble were the main ticket, but white curly tails with NO nibble were the hot item at the end near the campground.   We just about had a crappie on every cast.   We had lots of 10's and 11's with 4 at 12".    "Big Mamma" is still waiting for you!   We still have the deer sticks as well.  We would like to do a repeat this Friday, but it looks like a big front is coming tomorrow night.  That will dictate our late week plans.   How was the Sunday fish together?

PS Chauncy, Celery Bay was empty!   We caught 1 there.  This was the big shocker.  However, the carp were moving in to take over for the next week or so.

We had 12 people show up. Had a nice time talking about methods and areas of the lake where fish were caught. The big fish winner weighed in with 1.5lber, 14" black crappie. Chuck the ranger even stopped over to chat about creel surveys. He wanted to know how the northern pike and musky bite is right now. I fried about 5 lbs of fillets and we had shrimp, hot dogs, 2 pasta salads, fried chicken, chips, donuts, and cold pops and waters. Not a big turnout, but a good time was had by all.

Sounds like no one went home hungry?   We may try an encore performance on the fishing this Friday at Shenango if the front is fairly tame.   It looks like winds will be light later in the week.   What will be the lake of your choosing later in the week Chauncy?  Last night's coconut crappies were scrumpious!

Going to have to fish locally. The bearings on my trailer went and my axle is damaged. Had it fixed just well enuff to get it home. Wont bring it out until i get the new axle for it. Put my waders on and fished from the shoreline today. Had to wade out to reach the brushpiles. Got 12 keepers but caught 20 in 3 hrs. Jig and nibble, sliding bobber worked for me.

Chauncy, did you get the boat fixed and ready for action again?  We were up again on Friday and did manage to pick up 25 keepers including 7 @ 12".   However, the bite was definitely impacted by the mid-week front last week and the colder water.  We only caught fish in 2 spots----in the swim beach neighborhood in 6' of water and in the campground area in 11.5'.  The fish were basically glued to the bottom and the bites were very light.   The best action was on red/white tube jig w/ nibble, white curly tail w/ nibble, and a few on microspoons w/ nibble.   Based on percentages w/ eggs from the prior Friday, I'd say some spawning occurred before the front.  I'd suspect the majority of the spawn will now occur mid-week through late week with the warmer weather returning.
We noticed a Lowe anchored off the swim beach area as we were heading past in the AM.  Someone up front was wearing a white parka.  I thought it might be your brother and you, but the guy up front was hauling anchor too well for a man coming off rotator cuff surgery.   Keep healing, the Pirates need you!   Ha ha!

That was my brother Rich. I was getting my trailer repaired friday. Got back on the water saturday and hammered the slabs. Could have kept a limit all over 11"s but did a lot of c&r. Got to keep the crappie population healthy. Got plenty frozen already.  Put my buddy Jerry from Pittsburgh on some fish. Didn't want to see him go home empty handed. I'll probably go back thursday. They may be done spawning by then. Getting geared up for the bluegill bite. Should be starting soon.

Sorry. I didn't see your post Sherrylv. We posted at the same time and i left right after i posted. Again, i'm sorry i missed your post.
Microspoons are small handmade spoons that my friend makes down in GA. They work great on the crappie at most lakes i fish. Shenango included. Check out the website www.microspoons.com I use a variety of colors with the #4 hooks for crappie. My favorites are the beadheads. The tiny spoons are very good on the gills and perch. #10 hooks in black are my favorite. If you like fishing docks, try Da-fly. CQ from North Carolina uses them with fantastic results. Check out the photo section on his site. Hope you have as much success as we are. Let them know i told you about them and he'll probably put some extra jigheads in your order.

Getting geared up for the bluegill bite. Should be starting soon.

Already pounded( 20 quart bags full) the big gills( 8-10in) this year early. But the bite will get good again as soon as them big bull gills get on the beds. Its been a weird bite this year farther up north as the gills were hot and heavy early and the crappies are now just finding my hook in good numbers. The crapppies are still deep in the lake I have been fishing and still full of eggs.

SO MANY FISH SO LITTLE TIME.
WHY ARE ALL THE PLACES I HAVE YET 2 FISH SO FAR AWAY?

We may give it a shot for a tri-fecta this Friday as well if the storms stay away.  I can see the spawn lasting into the weekend on Shenango.  We'd like to find a few walleye too.   We still have some deer sticks for the cooler, but they will likely get consumed on the next adventure.
Sherylv, Chauncy gave you all you need on the microspoons.   They work.   I can't say they are an outperformer so far, but I'm a new user of them this year.

Under a bobber tipped with something like a crappie nibble, maggots, or mealworm seems to work fine.   These spoons have a unique way of falling so they can be hit by fish during the drop.
