Recreational boating fee!?

http://www.wicu12.com/news/index.vnss?newsid=5693&type=News

Anybody else see this on the news last night?  I guess I won't be doing any boating anymore if this fee goes thru.

I'm pretty sure it's everywhere.  The lawsuit that brought about the rule change was filed by a west coast environmental group.

Won't happen.  Do you know how many congressmen have boats?  No way are they gonna pay it, they will get it fixed.

Obviously we aren't bringing foreign invasive species from anywhere out of the country which is the bottom line. I don't think it will ever pass either because of that and the humungus effect, and even lawsuits, that would become of it. Just like homeland security... the big wigs always have to use a situation to invade or privacy and take our money. But the tree huggers never give up so who knows.

I will say that even though it's too late to stop the VHS virus and zebra mussels, I think they should do something about foreign ships dumping ballast water into any U.S. waters. Can't beleive they let it happen in the first place. BUT... I don't think just taking their money to allow them te keep doing it is the solution. Dump it offshore.... any pay anyway for the damage already done and the risk that still exists from contamintaed hulls and such. My 2 cents.... o.k. 4

Bill has passed committees in both the House and Senate I believe, has bipartisan support, but hasn't been voted on yet.

Email sent.  What would the fee be used for, hiring people to see if boaters have paid the fee?

    Folks,

This isn't a new fee or new legislation.  It is a court reinterpretation of the 30 year old clean water act.  The court now interprets it to mean all boats regardless of size.  An effort is being made to pass legislation to exempt recreational boats.  If a bill doesn't pass prior to September, the fee will be in effect.  So a law has to be passed to stop this.  If you boat the great lakes, you absolutely need to write or email your legislators immediately!

As far as I know, it isn't only the great lakes; it will be interpretted to mean any boat operating on any waterway.  That means all our little mud puddle 12-16 footers will need to pay some kind of fee as well.  Not sure about unpowered craft like canoes, rafts and kayaks.  I think they are exempted the way the law reads.

Relax gentlemen! It will never happend!

BUT, i am all for a small anual fee of something like $10-15 bucks. Only if it went to a cleaner water fund or something!

But there is no way they will get away with charging that kind of money. Boat manufacturers have a lot of money and great attorneys that fight this BS on a regular basis..

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...
