My ONE day of fishing, and I need help!

Okay, guys.  Here's the scenario:

I'm bailing out an old friend and installing a new well pump system for him on Saturday.  He lives just outside Venus, Forest County.  I've never been there, and have about four hours, from six to ten in the morning, to fish.  (Then, it's a full day's work.  At least I'm fishing FIRST, right?)

If YOU had only four hours, in that area, where would you go?  I fly fish, and release everything.  Size isn't what I'm after, just some solitude, trout, a nice hike.  I don't mind walking a few miles if that means better odds and fewer crossed lines.  I get along great with everyone, but I sure do like to be alone with the water, too.  And I only have that one morning.  Sheesh.  I gotta take some time off!

Thanks in advance!  I enjoy reading what you guys post.  Great resource.

I am not really sure where venus is at, but if I only had a few hours to fish.  I would got the DHAL section of east Hickery creek.  Nice stream and easy acess.  About 2 weeks ago there were plenty of fish in it.

That is good advice there.  That said though the stream holds fish year round.  If you go way up it it is real NICE.

Hey, everybody, thanks SO much for all the help!  Here's my report:

I drove up to East Hickory and arrived just as the sun was rising.  Okay, the clouds were so thick I couldn't actually SEE it, but that's not important.  (It was the earliest sunrise of the year, by the way.)  I parked about two miles above that "one lane bridge" and rigged up.  There were a few folks camping  just downstream, but I think I was up there before they woke up.

Fished a little hole and missed a few brookie strikes, then the rain started.  It's pretty tough to distinguish between a fly strike and a big raindrop falling from a hickory, or maple, or fir.  Plus, I'm not a young man.  I was a young man thirty years ago, but that's small comfort.  I kept with it, though, and switched from a mosquito pattern to a parachute wullf.  Bingo.  Floated that baby underneath one of the hundreds of overhanging branches and was rewarded with a foot-long brown.  Nice fighter.  The rain kept up, but I fished for another hour and released a few brookies and another nice brown.  I gave up when the drops from the bill of my cap were bigger than the feeder splashes.  There were a bunch of insects hatching, too.  What a world, huh?  I think I could have done okay with just a bare hook and lots of patience.  They don't plant that stream, do they?  I think from what I saw those weren't hatchery trout.

That is such a nice chunk of water.  Thanks again, everyone!  Aranbp and kayak99 for the sweet suggestion, and JEB for making sure I go back for more!  Is there any way you guys could call my boss on Monday and explain why I'll be unable to work the next couple weeks? (Oh, and I got my buddy's well pump in, and he's probably showering as I write this.  The world is sweet, and the world is wide.)

Glad you had a good time.  That section you fished has some nice deep runs in it.  Lots of overhangs to.
