    CB,

Are you running planer boards, or just the dipsy? I couldn't make it this weekend, but will be there Friday and Saturday, Lord willing.

NO BOARDS.  We ran medium dipsys on 3.5 back 60ft and cookie (3/0) dipsys back 80.

Only 2 of us onboard sunday and it was fast and furious west of walnut creek in 22-27ft of water.  Could barely keep the 4 rods we had in the water.  Im guessin though with this hot weather that this will flush them out of there in a hurry.

    Go get em.

Early this year I bought a LOWE FM 165 w/ a 60 horse motor. I am pretty sure I will be o.k. to fish out of Walnut in this rig........Seems most the reports the walleyes are in close right now. Any comments about what I might want to do, I have all the trolling gear as I use to fish w/ a buddy that had a 18' with a 150. I know I can't make the longer runs we did in that boat but I would think right now I would be ok as most reports guys are in 20 - 30 fow. Hopefully one day this week we will make the trip over. Any comments would be appreciated from you more experienced great lakes fisherman.

As posted on the fishing reports, I picked up 6 eyes on Saturday while trolling for smallies in 25 FOW directly out from the new shades beach ramp. I was trolling Bagley's Killer B2s deeper divers. Firetiger. Only caught one smallmouth though. A pretty 19.5 incher. Going away for a few weeks. Hope the Walleye action is hot when I get back.

Hey JTS i would not be worried, the past few years i have been in a 14 foot monark with a 25 mariner and been out 5 miles of walnut, 4 miles at northeast. just play it smart do not go alone, watch the weather, and have a plan.

Please have a marine radio with you. Even a handheld is better than nothing. Some cellphones lose their contact out there and are not dependable for safety. You need at least 5 watts.

    Joe,

To the best of my knowledge walnut is usually taken care of at the beginning of the year.  I had no problems going in or out with my boat.

Please save me the compliments...my ego cant take much more...lol...I appreciate the kind words...with gas at $4 I just dont think there should be very many secrets left among us anglers.  I know alot of guys dont want to let up numbers or hot spots, but giving a depth or a color isnt really going to kill anyone...

    Joe,

To the best of my knowledge walnut is usually taken care of at the beginning of the year.  By the end of the year (september - october) usually it starts to fill in and people begin to have problems.  I had no problems going in or out with my boat on Sunday.

I asked a fella that had a slip at Walnut before we went through Saturday and was told to stay a bit to the West out of the channel ( or past the end of the pier). He did not elaborate if there was an obstuction but that was what I was told and I had no issues dragging going in or out.

I just checked the forecast and Thursday is looking good.  I think I'll try Thursday and report back after then.  Were you picking up much "junk" in that shallow CB?  Thats the only thing I usually hate when fishing that shallow...is all the whities and sheephead you catch.  I'm off Thursday, so I think I'll give it a shot.....Come to think of it, I OFF for the whole summer!!!!  Yeeehaaawwwwww!

anzomcik, thanks for the info, your set up is about identical to what I just got out of. I thought about using it on Erie but I use to get to go along in a buddies bigger boat, he had to sell and I could not afford his when he sold it. Chauncy thanks for the tip on the radio. I'm hoping to get out thursday or saturday.

My buddy did wipe a prop out not too long ago when he got a little EAST of the mouth. He has a 21 ft trophy, I have not had a problem in my 15 footer but when we take his boat we trim the motor up a bit to hopefully keep that from happening again. And yes CB, very greatful for the info

I said I'd report back after yesterday's trip, so here it is...

Rough conditions limited us quite a bit yesterday, but we managed to bag 12 walleye. Strong E winds limited us to troll with the waves pretty much all day and waste time making runs to do it over and over again. Lost several other fish due to short strikes and a couple line breaks. Most of the fish seem to be right on the 24 to 28 foot breakline paralleling the shoreline anywhere west of Walnut. We trolled dipsys with minnow baits and stinger-spin harnesses. The harnesses, once again, outproduced the lures. Purple and watermelon harnesses with meat. Fire tiger seemed to be the better lure color. Sz. 1 Dipsys set at 3.5 out the sides with 45 to 50 feet of line out. Sz. 0 dipsy out the back set at 0 with 55 to 65 feet of line out. The fish are there. Tight Lines!

All in all, I was happy to get eyes on our first trip of the year, considering the conditions especially.  Erie weather/wave experts should simply ALWAYS forecast 6 feet or less waves!!!!

Nope, just one white bass and one white perch and thats it.  All others were walleye.

It was not easy fishing at all CB.  I couldn't get my speed down below 2.5 all day with that wind catching the inside of my enclosed roof. Didn't even need the boat in throttled...just on idle and in gear, wind did the rest.  Had it been calmer, those stingers would have don the trick, don't you worry!  If I went against the wind, it was tough to keep the boat straight.  Overall, I was happy with our results considering.

Thanks to all who have posted reports here and the free advice has been great. Went out of walnut for the first time on thursday. We caught 11 eyes, one real nice fat 29" eye that we did not weigh but I'm sure it was 8.5-9lbs. Had to get off the water early due to the rough conditions. We trolled cranks in fire tiger, black silver and rainbow trout.... dippsys with harnesses in black purple, copper, and gold orange. 30fow with our rigs set 3-15ft off the bottom. I sure hope I can make it back out there next week end.

It seems to be a good color this year along with the green. I have pulled more in with it any other color. I am making my own harnesses now mainly because of you(love the stinger hook)It is awesome to catch fish on something you made instead of store bought. The blades are dimpled silver and I just painted them half blue. I'll be out again tomorrow and with any luck will hit them again.

Thats awesome.  I know what you mean by catching fish on what you've made....it gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment when you know you have made something that will actually produce and you save some $$ along the way.  Lord knows, we could use more of that cash to help keep up with these fuel costs.  Those stingers really do make all the difference in the world as well and I'm glad to see its working for you.  I should make it back out sometime this week.....Good Luck taz and report back after your trip.

Thanks for all the info guys. I took my 2 boys out of Walnut Fri. and we pulled 3 tickets of eyes pretty quick. We fished in 30 to 35 feet and with dipsys and planers, both took fish. Thanks Carpetbagger for your reporst, they are very helpful! Keep em coming guys.
