9.9 kicker motor ?

To all of you who have a kicker motor and trailer your boat from home to the lake. Do you leave your motor staight down or do you trim it up like the big motor? If you trim it up during travel should you use something to help suport it? It dosent wiegh all that much.
I was told to leave it down and put it in gear so that the prop would not spin.  Well I listened but wasnt paying attention and about ripped it off backing up a street after I made a wrong turn.
I was wondering what other people do (besides knowing how to drive) when they travel. Thanks!

I always travel with my motor up and with some sort of support to keep it there. If not for the ground clearance you could rip it right your boat but thats just me and my opinion. I dont know about putting it in gear or not mine stays in neutral. I have not have any trouble ever in 12 years so take it as you wish. Safe travels and good fishing to you.

My kicker is on a gaerlick (sp.) bracket which takes much more abuse when the motor is in the tilted position, so I tow with it down.  I have replaced transoms on boats that did not tow with a support.  I was told that towning an OB without one of those can reduce the life of your transom by 1/2.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I have motor toters on both my motors while trailering.  They take the weight off of the hydraulics and keep them secure.  Also good for long term storage.  This is almost essential with power trim motors, but with manual lift motors, you should be fine leaving them locked in the down position as long as you have the proper ground clearence.  Good luck.

I don't know about leaving them locked in the down position. I'd rather have the motor be able to tilt up if I happen to go over something that would cause the end of the shaft to hit the ground. Only time mine gets locked down is when I put it in reverse.

I agree 2dog...thats why I've always used the toters.  However, if the clearence of the trailer is high enough, I don't see how the bottom of the motor could ever hit the ground unless the trailer come completely off the hitch.  Just my 2.

    Shutupnfish,
I've seen some entranceways to parking lots where if the motor is straight down it would hit.

Bingo! the transition from the street to alley was real steep. I didnt see it in time. I will have to pay more attention next time. Thanks to all that replied. It will be a couple of weeks till im on the water again.
