Question about a rainbow...

What is the orange line under the mouth???
This looks like the markings of a cutthroat...

From a SWPA stream...

Obviously a stockie from the fins, I have never seen that in PA.  Must be a genetic thing, where a gene that is not normally expressed just happend to show up in that individual.

Or sore mouth from too much C&R.....lol

I have landed a few like that in the past from a few differnt streams in Pa. They realy remind me of a Cuttbow ( rainbow-cutttroat hybred). Fished the White River and Norfork in Arkasas and they had Cuttbows thier that looked just like your fish. I have offten wondered if Pa has been messing around with a few cuttbows.

SO MANY FISH SO LITTLE TIME.
WHY ARE ALL THE PLACES I HAVE YET 2 FISH SO FAR AWAY?

interesting, this was on a creek with no hatchery...
    it was defiantly a stockie...

so is PA messing around with cuttbows and/or pure cutts in the hatchery???
they never publicize the fact they have them

Is that stream stocked at all by private clubs?

If not, then the answer is obvious, that PA is experimanting with cutbows.  Because, there is no question in my mind that that fish is a cutbow.

I heard that the Fish Comm. got a lot of fish this year out of state, alot from North Carolina, because its cheaper to buy than raise, maybe that has something to do with it.

May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it.

I read somewhere that North Carolina has some cutbows stocked.  I thought it was a cutbow as well, but figgured the PFBC would have some info somewhere if they were playing around.  I don't see what else it could be.  If it did get mixed in by accident with the brooders, in today's world of non transport between watersheds, someone's got some splaining to do.

I left a message with PFBC area 8 Rick Lorson...
hopefully i'll get a call back...

    my message...

"Mr Lorson.  Hello, my name is Kevin. I recently caught what i beleive to be a cuttbow in the ---- ---- section of ----- ---- Creek.  This ugly, disgraceful,  half-breed, hybrid mess of a fish is endangering my waterways and all the other waterways of the Laurel Highlands.  In order to counteract this menace, my associate and I have instituted a pike and musky stocking program, where a Minnesota strain of fast-growing and aggressive pike and musky species will be introduced into all approved trout waters in this section of the state.  If this doesn't work, we're throwing in a few snakeheads just for good measure.  Hopefully this will take care of the cuttbow problem.  Thank you and good day."

    KJH,

I brought this thread up today while in the flyshop and might have an answer for you.  Since you told me your general demographic this makes sense.  Shaffer run Hatchery recieved some cutbows that were being stocked out of state, its was like a little layover for them as they made thier way.  A man controlling some private water decided to purchase some and have them stocked somewhere near 7 springs but apparently some have filtered into where you are fishing and ended up on your line...amazing things a trout can do.  Anyways, everyone agreed that it's really a unique catch!  Good Job and thanks for sharing!

That may very well explain Kylers fish but spring of 2001 I got a 16in with same exact marking under it throat in Coolsprings Creek in Mercer county. Plain and simple the Fish Commision is playing around with a few cuttbows.

I got one just like that in Beaver County last year, I was pretty sure it was a cutbow, this confirms it ! I do beleive the PFBC is messing with a few of them....

Caught one that looked exactly like a regular rainbow with good color except for the orange marks under the mouth. Got it out of the shenango river in sharpsville.
