Sucks for the fisherman. By the sounds of it, may be a losing battle, somewhere someone or something is always gonna get the ****ty end of that stick.

Spending up the first 22 years of my life in the Seattle area, I had the chance to witness first hand the steady decline in all of the salmon and steelhead. One of my best seasons of steelheading was the year I caught 25 fish all year (and that is well above average). Erie fishermen don't count it as a productive DAY if they don't catch 25 fish. I guess that's why I'm happy when i catch a couple! Another fine example of the BS politics there is this: Sockeye salmon in the Lake Washington watershed are a man made fishery. They never existed until they were stocked. Now, when they run, the fishing doesn't even open until there are enough for the indians (oops: native americans) to net their "fair share"!! Never mind the fishery was started by the fish and game dept. Just imagine, gill nets stretched across the mouths of Elk and Walnut.

Almost forgot about the fish farms. A lot of the salmo decline started when the fish farms started showing up. Add to that the Atlantic salmon that escaped and are starting to show up in the rivers.

And lets not forget the protected sea lions who line up at the boat locks, catch a fish, eat one bite, and go catch another. They do this all day long, can't do anything because they're protected.
