New Stream Gauge On Walnut

I was fishing the Man. hole on Monday evening and the U.S.G.S guys were just getting done installing a gauge below the bridge .This will take alot of the guesswork out of predicting whether  to fish during the season, I have always used Brandy but this will make it alot easier.

I dont see why they wasted the money? all you have to know is if it rained or not or if the temp was high for some snow melt off (later in the run), then you just wait a couple of days for it to clear up...its not that hard...

From what I have learned here it is partially to study flow, which has been found to affect ecoli levels on the beaches at PI.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I'm sure the USGS people weren't thinking about the average steelhead fisherman trying to predict when they should come up and fish Walnut after it rains.

Stack, you kind of had to be fishing enough in different conditions to get a handle on the flow charts.
    (least "I" do anyway)

The best use for a newbie would be to know  whether to scrub a trip or not because of rain thru the night.

If there is rain predicted thru the night, look at the graph before the rain starts.
Look at it again before you head up in the morning.
If the graph has spiked WAY up, that's a good (not perfect) but a good indicator the creeks won't be fishable

I predict there will actually be a live web cam, at the Manchester Hole, someday soon.  Face it.... we now live in an instant world these days, with the advent of the internet and digital picture technology.  It's the age of "I want it now!", lol!

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

Actually learned a thing or two hundred about 'em when I had to take a hydrology class to graduate.  But thanks for the info!

You know what might be a more beneficial use of taxpayer dollars?  How about a NOAA weather buoy somewhere off of 20 mile?  Or even a NOAA reporting station somewhere between Conneaut and Dunkirk?  Now that big water season is back, it would sure be nice to get some accurate condition reports.  I can't tell you how many times I've sat on my boat at North East and scratched my head looking at 4-ftrs when the radio is saying 2 feet at Conneaut and winds from an entirely different direction.

Pennsylvania Trout Comission....for some reason they just cannot see the benefits to improving BOAT access to Lake Erie...

Kinda like asking why isnt there a gas station on Rt 5 near walnut creek...If someone wants to go in partners on it we can open a sheetz there and make millions...

I come back from Port Clinton where there are docks and camp sites together, and it just baffles me how PA has nothing even close to the boating and fishing facilities that OH does on Lake Erie.

You look at Walnut where they line up to RT 5 to launch and park in the grass...its a decent place to launch a boat...but its not a place that can handle 500+ boats a day during the peak summer months.

CB...you are absolutely correct!  I'd sure like to see our moneys more diversified when it come to fishing oppotunities in this state.  Everyone claims that we have more fishermen and fishing opportunities in this state, but our facilities are mediocre at best!  Yeah, of course, Ohio has more shoreline access to Erie.  We have less which will result in less facilities, but those facilities should be top notch...IMO!  Walnut is nice, but its a joke to have to launch or trailer there when its crowded and that has nothing to do with the faciltity, but rather how its managed and run.  I was at Fenwick Marina last weekend and there were literally hundreds of boats launching Saturday morning.  4 to 6 ramps and I literally did not have to wait more than 15 minutes to launch my boat once I had it ready to go.  Now thats efficiency!  People don't launch and tie up there dang boats right on the ramp area like the morons do at Walnut.  You launch your boat, go take it to a free area and tie it up to wait for the the guy who parks the truck!!!  Its just common sense, but that sure doesn't come a dime a dozen these day it seems.  Ok...thats my rant and what I will have to look forward to very soon!
