It might be.  The fish is pretty decomposed and was fun over by a car....  I would think they could identify it by DNA testing.

I don't know if the Florida Bowfin are the same fish but I've watched those "walk" through a parking lot to another pond. And NO I wasn't drinking! lol

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...

I've kept many bizarre aquarium fish and have reference books on many types of fish, aquarium and gamefish, and have never seen anything like that! It would be REALLY interesting if more than 1 was discovered. Even considering it was crushed and also deteriorating , I have to agree, it does not resemble a trout. My immediate guess is someone through an exotic into the water. Just my opinion, doesn't mean anything. Thanks Fisherchic!!!! Very entertaining!!!!

The thing looks alien to me.  I don't know about you guys, but if I pulled that thing along side the boat, I'd fire off a magazine into the thing then cut the line!  If trout had teeth like that, I'd be carrying a pretty big stick.

    Snakehead

A bizarre find in Pioneer Park Pond in Brigham City has biologists stumped. A fish with fangs was discovered; now officials are trying to figure out what exactly it is. Craig Schaugaard, Aquatic Manger for the Department of Wildlife Resources, said, "When we first saw that fish, we thought, ‘What in the crap is this thing?'" Where did this fish come from, and more importantly, what is it? The mystery started a couple weeks ago when every fish in the pond went belly up. Ben Boyce, with the Brigham City Corporation, said "Approximately 4,000 fish, when the ice came off the pond, were discovered to be dead." The pond may have been poisoned, or the water may have run out of oxygen due to the thick ice. "We just have no way of knowing," Schaugaard says. Among the dead were the species the pond had been stocked with, along with the unexpected -carp, goldfish, and the mystery fish that was found in the parking lot, apparently dragged by an animal. "It's been decomposed. It's been run over," Schaugaard said. Biologists say it's not a new species. They believe the fish could be a Lake Trout whose tissue decomposed rapidly, making its teeth more prominent. It could also be a cast-off, a pet fish dumped by someone tired of taking care of it. "We would be appreciative if the aquarium fish didn't come to our pond," Boyce said. Aquatics biologists say if they can't figure it out, they'll let the fish decompose then examine the bone structure to determine the species. While they wait, the fish stories will only grow. Schaugaard says, "It definitely could become an urban legend." Officials will soon begin restocking the pond with fish of their choosing. It's safe to assume that won't include any aquarium fish or mystery fish. Besides adding the new fish, park officials are also applying for a grant to improve the pond. They want to make it deeper and add rocks and tree stumps to make it a better habitat.

That's what I though, at first, but compare the jaw structures.  The snakehead looks like it has  dentaries (the bones the teeth grow out of) that are separate from the mandible and premaxillary while mystery fish doesn't.  To dumb it down, the snakefish has "lips".  Also, notice how much space there is between the nostrils on the snakehead, compared to the mystery fisy.  Plus, there is no sign of what might have been a dorsal fin.  Snakeheads have fairly pronounced dorsal fins.

Duud, the thing was hit by a car and obviously sat rotting in the sun for a while, don't think the absence of lips or a dorsal fin is good indicator to what it might be. Look at the shape of the mouth and the location of the eyes... also how did it get hit by a car??? Snakheads are one of the few fish that can breath air and have been known to wiggle from one body of water to another. I'll bet its a snakehead, but as you said DNA test will tell for sure.

Maybe I didn't dumb it down enough.  The "lips" aren't really lips like we have.  The mandible and maxillary are bones, they won't rot in the sun.  The snakehead's dorsal fin runs at least two-thirds of its body.  Have you ever yanked a dorsal fin off of a fish?  Was it hard to do?  Did it leave a hole?  If there is no dorsal fin remaining, there has to be something left behind, either a hole or boney stubs, something that should be noticable in the photos, if it is a snakehead, based on the length of that fish's dorsal fin.

Get past the fact that the fish was run over by a car, that was not the cause of death.  If you read the article you'll find that the lake was covered by an extra thick layer of ice that recently melted revealing a large fish kill, probably because the lake went anoxic.  Besides, don't you think that if the fish was run over by a car and rotted in the sun that the head might be a little disfigured?  So you can't use the head shape to support your position.  You can use the maxillary to make a determination though.  The length and shape of it in relation to the eye is a key component of fish identification.  For this fish it's probably what the biologist used to make his initial determination of it being a lake trout.

OK.  Since you are so insecure that you have to resort to name calling.  We will just wait for some test results.  After all, I'm sure that a self proclaimed know-it-all, with nothing better to do can tell more from a couple photographs than a degreed, and trained fisheries biologist can tell from a hands-on evaluation.
