Beginner's Tackle

I mostly use spinning gear when I fish for trout, but I've always wanted to try fly fishing. Is there a quality, relatively cheap rod (under $100) that I can buy to fish for trout and the occasional small bass? Also, what tackle (line, flies, other accesories...) does a beginner need to survive in the fly-fishing world?

Your best bet would be a package deal from Scientific anglers, Redington or Cortland they come with line rod reel some have a video everything you would need to get started. Buying the gear individualy could get expensive. A decent fly line and backing a few leaders will easily put you over $50 alone so a package that includes these things would be the way to go.. However, once your hooked plan on spending much much more!!

    Matthoops33,
Believe it or not:  Go to Wal-Mart buy one of the 20 buck Shakespeare complete rigs.  They work well.  Not the finest piece of equipment there is but then again.  You're just starting.  Then you can put your money to use buying some good flies from Fish USA>

For mostly trout some bass a 5wt would be fine.  For mostly bass and some trout you might want to look at a 6wt.

Vinestbrew pretty much took the words from my mouth.  One more thing to add is that cabelas has some decent combos(line, rod, reel) in the under $100 range.  I personally would advise anyone to stay clear of the $20 setups at walmart.  Learning to fly-fish is frustrating enough without the aid of an awful rod, reel, and line.  You would be well advised to look at the $60-100 setups, the difference will be pretty substantial from the "walmart special"

Cortland has some pre loaded combos that would work well for you. The best in particular that is $99.95 has a...

    9' 5/6 IM6 Graphite rod
    Mosquito Disc Reel
    333 Line
    Backing
    Leader

I've used this set up before for trout, and it would definitely handle some bass AND steelhead fishing.
