Clark, Mahaney and the Shenango Rec open next Friday...you can always launch from Golden Run, Hartford and Parkers depending on the water level.

Dont send these guys on a wild goose chase. The lake is so high, the only ramp that you could launch from is the rec ramp. The rest are to high.

Was there on Saturday for a little while.  Lake was high and muddy and the wind was real bad.  Did not see anyone else or any boats out.  It has to stop raining but looks like rain most of the week.

Was fishing from shore on sunday. Saw one boat. They didn't stick around long with the wind blowing like it was. Neither did i. Water's too high to fish the spring community holes.

I threw in a few spinners and plastics today, but no action - too windy.  I FINALLY bought a boat and I can't wait to have some fun.   How productive is SHenango lake?  I hear it's good for crappie, but I'm looking for a place to catch bass on the surface on a calm summer evening.  How would you Shenango veterans rate it?

Fish mainly for bass and there are good days and bad. Over the years it has gone from nice catches to moderate. The size has really changed too. Suppose to be a big bass lake but I sure haven,t seen that happen. The tornaments , I beleive , are hurting this lake. Auther, Wilhelm or Erie are by far better. A good crappie lake for sure.

Thanks.  My impression is that Wilhelm has gone downhill, too.  I'm sure Erie is worth the drive.

    Mikastorm,

Shenengo getting hurt by bass tournaments?
There really isn't many held there, and when there is, it's usually a 20-40 boat field.

What has kept tourneys away from it, is it's restricted bass limit.

I love the lake! I live 20 minutes from it, and it's been good to me for around 30 yrs now.

Fished it a little this afternoon.  Not a hit.  Lake level is at summer pool according to the corps.  A nice warm spell should help things out.  Good luck.

Restricted bass limit, and that is why they don,t have more tournaments?
There is not that many bass over 15 inches, thats why.

I also have fished this lake for 30 years and remember back when you could catch at least 4  fish a day over 15. Now you get one , two, your lucky.
Many days your lucky to catch one fish. Need more structure. The lake is old and most stumps are gone, compared to years back. There was more gravel than now, a lot of sedament over the years.

Guys, sounds like you ain't fishing it correctly!

20 yrs ago, For me, 50-75 fish a day was common, with 1/2 going over 3 lbs, and around 10 or so going over 4 lbs., with some 5 & 6's mixed in. No joke.

Yes, it ain't what it used to be, but THEY ARE THERE!

I still catch my share of 4+ lb'ers, and on some spring days every year, it proves to me that the middle/bigger class fish (3-5 lbs) are still there BIGTIME!.
I always have a few days in the spring where I can boat 50+ fish, with half going 2 lb'ish, and half go 3-5 lbs., with a few around 6'ish, and a good chance at a 7+'er!

The key is "struture", not "cover"!
    BIG difference between the two.

For instance, right now it's waaaay high. Give it 4-5 days to calm down from all the rain & runoff, which it looks like it's going to get looking at the weather for the next few days, and let them start pulling some water, with staple lake/weather conditons, and WATCH OUT! It'll clear up a bit, and with that current I can pull up on some points, with that current flowing, and pick them off on almost every cast. They'll be stacked on certain points/creekbends at this time, and it can get CRAZY!

Learn to fish the 6-12 ft depths for bass in this lake, around "sructure", and then find "cover" on that structure, and your catch will increase, guaranteed!
