pymy report.....

just got back from the lake and saw ice as far as the eyes could see.  there were pockets of open water here and there, but the whole south end up to new bowers seemed ice covered.  did not cross the causeway or go north, so i am not sure what is up there.  down by the dam, there must have been 100 red-breasted mergansers, along with some grebes and coots.  even saw a couple of buffleheads.  can't be long coming.  did see (my wife saw them first) a huge flock of turkeys, with a few gobblers in full strut.  c'mon warm.......

I think the north end warms up quicker ice should be almost off there.

from the light at lake road and the causeway, looking northeast, all i saw was ice.  but your right, that north shoreline is the first to melt.  funny, i saw some ponds on ohio rt. 11 coming up and a few had the north ends melted while the bigger ones had absolutely no ice melt.  from what i understand, mosquito lake is breaking up fast.

Was out last night. There is a HUGE patch of water open on the north end by bridge 20 and in front of the spillway. Fished for about two and a half hours, but lost the only fish i got hooked. Heard they were catching a few walleyes at the spillway though.

Its leaving pretty fast.  Fished on a "decent" 6 1/2" on Saturday and did alright.  Got one toad crappie that was 15 1/2".  I'd post a pic, but I am awaiting my cell camera's pic to be emailed to me and I don't photobucket.

storm, were there any others out saturday?  hard to believe we still have hard water this late.  especially that thick.  for years, we would start wading right around st. patrick's day.

    Hey guys

The ice on Pymy, at least on the North end won't be gone for at least a couple of weeks! Was out today & will be out until the rain comes & temps climb! There is around 8" ice, I know I'm ready for spring too! But last ice usually treats me well! Whoever is saying the launchs are almost open are the same guys who say " We hammered them last night".......Good fishin'

Not really! There have been some boats fishing the Spillway though! I am not sure where they are launching. Probably small boats put in close by. As far as I know, End of the road is the closest launch to the Spillway, Good fishin to ya......

Just wanted to say thank you to a great end to the ice season. Got to meet and fish with Loby, his friend Scott P. and Joe. We shared some bonus ice time, laughs, and even a few fish. Already looking forward to next season. May your open water time be safe and productive.   Lou

Yep the causeway is pretty much open  but the launches are still iced in. They are catching walleye by the the stringers fool at the spillway. Those guys need some competion there.

hahah yeah i was really about ready to throw him in the water. what really got me was he stayed for oh 10 minutes more then left. I heard I THINK now...that the causeway was fishable. pretty sure i over heard that. There was still alot of ice blowing around on the lake a big chunk came into the spillway and messed fishing up for a bit.

Hey bull i heard you were saying that ice had broke off and came into the spill way, did you happen to notice if any of the bays have busted up and become fishable? I used to try and fight for a spot at the spillway and it used to be worth it but now I don't think any of those guys work. There isn't a time of day or time of week when you can just get in there and fish. The causeway is open I saw two guys fishing it last weekend, they weren't doing any good though.

    Spillway fisherpeople,

Please think about throwing back a few of the female walleye. I love to catch walleye also, but just take a minute to think about all the eggs she is carrying. Yes, I know that the natural reproduction in Pymy is almost non existant but taking home limits of egg filled walleye does not help the situation! My point is this.......If you are one of the many, anglers that ****/complain about the walleye population in Pymy, & that nobody cares or is doing anything to try to improve it, take a second to think about those big females your about to fillet!! I love Pymy & all the other local lakes and have released many fish and you know what?....it makes me feel good! I know that a lot of local well known anglers share my thoughts because I have discussed it with them!

    Good fishin' to ya!

Most of the causeway was open, the wind has stacked some ice on the south side, the bridges are open but the bays & launches I checked are still ice covered. I agree with Loby 100% on returning the egg filled females. My feelings on the spillway is that it should be closed until walleye season opens again & my reason is simple, to many foul hooked fish are kept, to much buddy fishing like carpin05 mentioned, & if it was closed that would be 800-1000 or what ever walleye left in the lake that the 10-20 regular meat hunters don't get. A few years ago I over heard 1 guy trying to give last years walleye away to make room for this years. I know closing areas is not a popular idea but it seems only a few benefit from fishing that area.

how can anyone enjoy that?  it was tamer on the ohio bridge on the causeway during the 70s but we still had our share of idiots.  goofiest thing i have ever seen.  heard that 2 guys slept in a van and held their spots on the wall for two days.  man, they need a life.

Probably the same guys complaining about the PFC not doing anything about the dwindling numbers of walleye saying I remember when you could get 2 limits a day.

trav, i have known a couple of guys who were pretty good at catching walleyes.  they would keep logs of how many keepers vs. how many throwbacks. they would keep hundreds each year and now have quit the lake because there are no walleye and the fish commission let it go to heck.  i love catching and eating walleyes, but i think in the decades that i fished the lake (some years over 100 days) i can count on both hands the number of times i kept a limit, if that.  3-4 fish were plenty, and if i only hit one, it always went back.  like everything else, greed may have played a part in destroying something good.  had there been enough 15-17 inch fish returned, they may have done serious damage to the alewife population.
