Trout Magnets
I believe I have posted something similar in the past, but how well do trout magnets work on steelhead? If they work at all, what colors seem to work best?

They work on the smaller fish, the larger ones (anything over 20") just straighten out the hooks. if they were made on heavier hooks, then the'd be worth their weight in gold.

Killdeer, The DO straighten rather easily, but I've landed plenty of Steelhead over 20" on them.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it can be done. I've landed my share over 20" as well, but the hooks were all on they're way to being straight. One I landed actually wrapped himself in my line enough that after the hook straightened and pulled out, he was still tangled enough not to get loose that I was able to beach him before he escaped. I will say this, I haven't had a hook survive a fish over 20" or so.

ever try mini tubes(1 or 1.5 inch) on a squirt head jig from basspro? they give alittle better action than the trout magnet and if find the hooks hold up better

I used white and mint green in the past and caught steel also, yeah the hooks may straighten but i just set drag a little looser and let the rod do the work. of course when appropriate crowds etc.
I have become comfortably numb

trout magnets are usually on a shad dart, couldn't you buy a heavier(hook weight) shad dart at a tackle shop? i find that they work well for panfish under a jigging bobber.

Boy, you fellas must be trying to horse these fish in. I have never had any trouble with the hooks straightening. Not with steel, cats, or any fish for that matter. Try not buying the new hooks with the longer shank, these ones seem (look) weaker.

Sorry, last post was not in reply to chauncy, but rather the topic in general.
